The Duffy is a dramatic 130-kilometer drive on a winding, narrow paved road connecting the communities of Pemberton and Lillooet, British Columbia.Heading north, the road climbs from the Pemberton Valley through the glaciated mountains of the Cayoosh Range before descending into the dry canyons of the Fraser Plateau. It's an incredible transition from the green, wet Coast Mountains to the dry, semi-arid canyons and desert-like conditions.I finish the loop by heading back to Vancouver over the rough, dirt Hurley Road.

We had been using our truck camper as a little base camp while exploring the park, driving around to different spots so I could put my new camera to use.We pulled off the road at this spot and decided to stop for the evening, cook some dinner, and watch the sunset. It ended up being one of those completely unplanned moments that turned into one of my favorite photos from the trip. The Tetons have always been a special place for me. My dad first brought me here when I was ten years old, and I've been coming back ever since. Being back in the Tetons after climbing one of the peaks and spending the evening by the truck watching the sunset felt pretty full circle. This photo is a reminder of why I keep bringing my camera along in the first place, to document the places and experiences that mean something to me.

It was the perfect rig for our adventure. We loved the simplicity of it.We drove through the upper United States and entered Canada from Montana. We explored Banff and Jasper National Parks and made the long but beautiful drive to the Dempster Highway and Tombstone Territorial Park. We hiked the area and took in the breathtaking autumn scenery. The orange, rust, and golden colors were spectacular. We had never felt so isolated as we did that night. Just the three of us, our faithful truck and camper, and the untouched wild.We entered Alaska through the northernmost border crossing. Our travels took us to Chicken, Denali, Homer, Talkeetna, Seward, Valdez, Whittier, Hyder, and everywhere in between. It was quite the adventure, and we would do it all over again in a heartbeat. We still have the same truck and camper. They have taken us through Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana since then.

A late start and a wrong turn left us changing our stop for the night to Crested Butte, hoping that dispersed camping was available.Even though it was a Wednesday, the aspen leaves were popping, and I knew better than to think the chilly 36-degree morning temperatures would keep leaf peepers at bay. As we rolled down State Road 12, we found all the choice spots taken.I finally broke down and settled for neighbors for the night at a spot overlooking a stream and some aspens that were in full fall glory. While we were still setting up camp, the clouds broke just enough to light up the mountainside aspens.I had my good camera still packed away in the truck camper, but luckily I had my phone and snapped a few shots with a calendar submission in mind.

While I was stopped, I looked back at our truck camper sitting in front of a wall of bright yellow aspens and realized it made the perfect foreground. Sometimes the rough road is just part of the adventure. I am almost hesitant to share the photo because this place feels like one of those local secrets that has somehow stayed quiet, with breathtaking views in every direction. We happened to be there during the Green River cattle rotation, when the herds were grazing throughout the valley. Watching cattle graze beneath those mountains was such a cool glimpse of Wyoming ranching and the American beef industry in a landscape where it has been part of life for generations.Between the cattle, the river, the mountains, and our little truck camper tucked along the water, it was one of those places that made the long, bumpy road completely worth it.
