Growing up, my parents had a truck camper to get us kids out camping. It brought us closer and taught my brother, sister, and me how to experience America a little piece at a time.Of course, my happiest childhood memories of camping always involved making new friends. Now I see my own kids playing with other kids and making the same memories. My kids still trade letters and messages halfway across the country with other kids they met around the campsite.

We noticed a few RVs scattered across the landscape and discovered that the area was BLM land. Most campers had settled into the larger, more accessible sites, but our truck camper gave us the flexibility to navigate several gullies and follow the rugged terrain farther out. We eventually reached a secluded rocky promontory with sweeping views of the surrounding red-rock cliffs and desert landscape. It was one of those special places that reminded us why we love traveling with a truck camper: the freedom to venture beyond conventional campsites and discover extraordinary places along the way.

This famous landmark along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Pioneer Trails was an important milestone for westbound pioneers, who hoped to reach it by July 4th to remain on schedule for crossing the mountains before winter snows. Our search led us to a beautiful spot overlooking the North Platte River. We spent a peaceful evening watching a few fly fishermen drift along the river and listening to the gentle lowing of cattle from nearby ranches. These unexpected discoveries are among our favorite parts of traveling by truck camper. We treasure finding these hidden gems, enjoying their natural beauty, and always leaving them better than we found them by picking up any litter left behind.
