#205 - Leah WheeldonNear Port Alice, British Columbia2008 Dodge Ram 15002016 Westland Travelaire 7.6 MidsizeCamera Used - iPhone 6This is my favourite, private boondocking spot about 45 minutes from my home at Port Alice, BC. I love this spot because I can leave the camper door open for the dogs to go in and out as they please, without bothering anyone. I can work from this spot, I can take my mountain bike and ride, I can go on a few hikes to see some gorgeous northern Vancouver Island mountain views. There's a creek nearby to cool off in and for the dogs to drink. It's a happy spot, and I love, love my camper! The Westland Travelaire 7.6 Mid-size is only 1,000 pounds, made for the mid-size trucks AND it has a real bathroom! I had the Westland 7.6 previously on my 2012 Nissan Frontier and really enjoyed that setup. I needed a larger truck but wanted to keep my beloved Westland Camper. I found the 2008 Dodge Ram half ton with a fraction of the mileage my Frontier had. I had a riser box made for the camper to clear the cab on the larger truck and away we went. Thank you!

There were some tight spots that got your attention. So much so that I had to fold in the driver's mirror and wish I took off the jacks. It just opened up a few days before because of the snow. We had just completed our most recent project to upgrade our rig with a custom flatbed from Highway Products for our 2018 Hallmark Guanella camper. And so with a long weekend after Thanksgiving 2021, we decided to take a road trip to see all the National Parks we hadn't visited before. And so we visited Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe National Par, and White Sands National Park. This photo was taken after driving the Dunes Drive road in White Sands National Park, stopping for some short hikes and sand sledding. The truck was parked in a pullout amongst the gypsum road and dunes. I was walking around when I noticed the strong contrast of the white gypsum sand and the chrome of the truck so I took this photo. I love how the gypsum highlights the tread of the tires.

This one lane, 525 foot long bridge is 238 feet above the bottom of a deep, shear- sided, rocky gorge. Located on the McCarthy Road, about one-third of the way to Chitina. This cantilevered bridge has been modernized from the original steel railroad trestle to a modernized span, however one passenger decided to forgo the backseat and, with a scared face, walk across the center of the span. History, stunning scenery and fun all in one place! Interpretive panels located on the east end of the bridge detailed facts about this engineering marvel of 1910. The original bridge was built during two brutally cold -70 winter months in 1910 in preparation for the transport of copper from the Kennicott copper mine. As I was driving out of the park, I came to a roadside pullout where you can sometimes see moose in the ponds below on the south side of the road. There was a tour bus already parked in the area with many visitors stepping out of the bus. I considered that a good sign that I might be seeing moose. As I exited my truck, I noticed that everyone there was looking behind my truck camper instead of in the direction of the ponds. When I turned to see what was of special interest behind me, I saw the full rainbow and quickly positioned myself to capture the rainbow with my truck camper and the bus driving away from me. That was a good omen of other special things to happen further down the road on my way to Talkeetna, Alaska. I happened upon two bull moose along side of the Parks Highway. Also, stopping at Denali View North, Denali View South and finally a couple of viewpoints to observe and photograph Denali mountain in Talkeetna, I mostly saw the entire mountain in full view which really surprised me because as I was driving away from my campsite the sky was cloudy and foggy. You just never no when the mountain might be out and you get to be one of the 30 to 40 percent that are fortunate to see Denali which is 20,310 feet in elevation. This photo was taken during my seventh road trip from Texas to Alaska. Alaska and Denali should be on everyone's Bucket List. It's that spectacular! Duke and I camped on top of a cliff looking down at the Owyhee River. Duke actually passed away the next day, Christmas. We didn't know it but like our other big dog Bear 7 years earlier, had a tumor on his spleen that ruptured. I was chained up further down the road, luckily, because it snowed that night and I had to keep the peddle buried to make it out 30 miles with my ailing dog. Made it back to Boise and an emergency vet was open so I could put poor Duke to sleep. It was the worst Christmas of my life. At the time of this picture every thing was good, yet Duke never laid down on his bed in the back of the truck. I noticed but didn't think much of it. Ah life, we just never know do we? In the meantime we have a 6 month pudelpointer pup named we named Orley, we got him at 8 weeks. He's a bird dog who we love immensely. We'll start hunting chukar this fall. The first attempt was on our BMW GS 1200. On December 19th, we were an hour away from the Mexican border the Sonota crossing, the trip was cut short when a car turned in front of us, put us in the hospital and destroyed the motorcycle. Going through rehabilitation we needed something to keep us motivated and Baja was still on our hearts and minds. We reached out to two of our friends Giorgio and Silvia from Italy who we have not seen in five years, Covid contributing to that and the need for all of us to escape our everyday lives. So in March we bought a 2017 Ford F250 Super Duty Gas which was a challenge in itself to find a truck in our price range. The next hurdle is to find a slide in truck camper that checked all our boxes. We found a 2019 Cirrus 820 in Wisconsin. The date set was early June. It was the timeline that worked best for all of us. June in Baja on the Sea of Cortez side is noted for temperatures well into the 100s F for this time of year. Four of us sleeping in a slide in truck camper would test most friendships, but Giorgio and Silvia were the best match for this type of trip. We had two nights where the low temp was 101F we were all so grateful for the large windows and skylight to keep what ever kind of breeze coming. We also had small rechargeable fans above each window. We spent 11 days on the Baja bouncing between the Sea of Cortez temps in the 100s and Pacific ocean in the 70s. We went down as far as Todos Santos pretty much following the King’s Highway and all the beauty it had to offer. If I had to give any advice, take your time. The roads, even though paved, Highway 1 and #5 goes all the way to the tip. They are extremely challenging for bigger rigs. We are already planning our next adventure on the Baja. Christmas cannot soon enough.

Last summer we camped at Osprey Lake, explored a bit of the KVR on our bicycles and found we liked the area. This year our friends from Ontario, whom had just purchased a RV, did their first cross Canada trip and wanted to see some of the less visited areas of BC we camp in. Our plan was to spend two nights, but our friends liked the area so much, we ended up spending four nights. My friend brought his motorcycle so we were able to do day trips to other lakes with our wives and solo exploration of the old FSRs and parts of the KVR. The days were warm and the lake provided relief from the heat. The nights cooled down due to the high elevation.
