Camping at the Albuquerque hot air balloon festival, several balloons launched and landed right around my camper one morning! It was my favorite experience of the whole event. Camping is rally style with other campers right next to you, so it was pretty much impossible to get a good picture without other muggle campers who didn't have truck campers in the background.

I finally made it there this year, and it did not disappoint! Not for the faint of heart, it's approximately either 20 or 40 miles on dirt/gravel roads, depending on what direction you approach from. Although I think they were the best maintained dirt roads I've ever been on! I also had a really hard time using the gas pedal to back up into the campsite I found. My eyes told me I was perfectly safe, but my brain was having trouble making my foot work to press that pedal.

We are on a quest for bridges, lighthouses, whales, waves, rocky shorelines fall foliage. On September 20, 2022 we pulled into Russian Gulch State Park for a four night stay and at sunset I took this photo at the gulch. This is not of the world famous Bixby Creek Bridge on CA-1 in Big Sur but in my opinion it is better and for multiple reasons. First, there are no traffic jams of desperate persons tying to quickly snap a roadside photo of just a portion of the bridge. Second, you can park and walk out under the bridge to a beautiful beach and catch some sun, surf fish on the rocks or paddle out to the open ocean in a kayak to the most beautiful rocky shore; the Mendocino Headlands. Third, there are two outstanding lighthouses nearby; the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse and the Point Arena Lighthouse. Finally, there are also two beach towns nearby. This is the Russian Gulch Bridge carrying two lanes of CA-1, from romantic Mendocino to Fort Bragg which has the outstanding Mackerricher State Park. Without bridges there would be no truck camping.

The opportunity to catch the full moon set behind the tallest mountain in the lower 48 is something you just don’t want to miss. There is so much to do in this area throughout the year from winter treks through Death Valley or skiing at June Lake to summer hikes around Mt Whitney and mountain biking at Mammoth Mountain. One of our favorite times is early in October when the Lone Pine Film Festival occurs. This has got to be one of the best small town film fun venues and includes an OG all-American parade down main street. It’s also an ideal time to experience the seasonal change in foliage as we check out the nearby ancient bristle cone pines, hike up to the Ashram at the headwaters of Tuttle Creek and interesting sections of the John Muir trail around Whitney Portal, to seeking out the myriad of arches in the Alabama Hills. This is an easily accessible and budget friendly location where everyone can find something that stokes their camping passion. We find that every trip with our super cool Outfitter Juno 10 and it’s “cabana” pop-out porch. With 44 gallons of freshwater, both an in/outdoor warm shower, queen bed and lots of high windows, it’s the ideal long-trip rig. Further, the pop out cabana porch gives my wife and I the private space in side the camper so often hard to find and often needed to keep the “marital bliss” on longer camper trips. This unique camper rides atop our “unicorn” 1998 Ram 2500 long-bed 4x4 club cab (whose 1/2 doors open!) with the super efficient and easy to fix 12 valve Cummins. We run the OEM 1 ton leaf springs and big D-80 axel with Timbrens fully loaded we weigh just shy of our GVR. We also introduced a newer manual Heavy Duty NV5600 6 speed transition when the original 5 speed and clutch needed to be repaired. With the Juno’s pop top down and cruising at 65 and 1700 RPM, we regularly get 15-16 MPG loaded, which we really need with diesel prices at $6 in CA!

The opportunity to catch a sunrise on the tallest mountain in the lower 48 is something you just don’t want to miss.

Dropped a dime on some handy stuff, especially the Swedish meatball plate! First time visitor hot tip: No matter what, go to the bathroom BEFORE you start walking around. The maze is insane! LOL.

We were on the 60 mile gravel McCarthy Road headed to the Kennicott Mine when we encountered the Kuskulana River Bridge. Constructed in 1910 as a steel railroad trestle, it is now a modernized one lane wide pedestrian and vehicle bridge. The snow capped mountains provided a beautiful backdrop for this shot. This bridge is located in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska. We discovered upon reaching the mine that many visitors had flown in. We believed though that this was a drive worth taking! Our truck camper has been our home for the majority of the past two years.

It’s extra special because it was my birthday weekend and my wife was looking for just the perfect place to spend the weekend with other expats who enjoy Baja as much as us. The camper is our huge 2002 Lance 1130G complete with dry bath (making it a favorite of my wife). We typically do not take our Lance south of the border or off road due to its large and low overhanging rear end but with a U-shaped dinette that can seat 6 adults and a kitchen large enough to cook for everyone it make this big boy camper a party on wheels (or on our truck’s wheels). Our truck, “Torro”, is our trusty Ram 2500 4x4 club cab long bed with the Cummins 12 valve and NV5600 manual 6 speed. This set up gives us a reliable 15 MPG with the Lance going 65 MPH at 1700 rpm all day long. Fortunately diesel isn’t as expensive in Baja as it is in SoCal. Just another great reason to keep truck Camper adventuring in Baja, Mexico.

We had spent Christmas with family in upstate New York and we’re traveling west to spend New years eve with friends in Colorado Springs. Driving across Kansas is not the most interesting, but we made a few detours to stretch our legs and explore. These rocks are sandstone and local legend says that the hole for the arch was started by a bullet shot from the gun of an outlaw. We cannot confirm or deny this fact. But this area was interesting to explore and view the geography in an area that is otherwise flat and uninteresting. This rock formation is on private land and is open to the public. Please be respectful of this special place. Sadly, there is no camping here so we had to keep moving west.
