It was thus that the BBC in London proposed to the Egidio Feruglio Foundation the filming of a documentary conducted by the renowned naturalist and documentary filmmaker Sir David Attenborough, about this amazing discovery and the natural wealth of Argentine Patagonia.

We both are originally from the east coast and moving west made us realize how much land there is out here to explore. We thought, what better way to explore than in a 4x4 camper! After weeks of searching on Craigslist, we found the perfect camper. We bought her, and completely renovated the inside with new styling for maximum enjoyment. We live in the Mt. Hood area of Oregon and it is awesome to explore the mountains, desert, and coastal areas. Every weekend we roll out to a new stunning place and this camper setup has been extremely ideal for us. Unless people have a truck camper, they usually don’t understand what it’s like to be off the beaten path and surrounded by stunning scenery that’s just waiting to be explored. This picture is just sums up one of the beautiful places we’ve been and the culture of the truck camping family.

The Point Amour Lighthouse is a historic site and it is the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada. Subsequent to our tour of the lighthouse we were advised that we could overnight in their parking lot. It was a beautiful spot right on the Labrador coast of the Strait of Belle Isle. It was so windy that we had to point the truck into the wind and put down the jacks to stabilize the camper for the night. A second truck camper joined us later that evening. We experienced everything on this trip from shorts and tee shirt weather to winter jackets, toques and gloves. On day ten we camped overnight next to a snow plow in a gas station parking lot in Port Hope Simpson. We heard the snowplow leave about 4:30am and woke up that morning to snow covered roads. For those interested in doing Expedition 51, the worst part of the trip was Highway 389 in Quebec. Once you get north of the Manic 5 hydro dam it turns to gravel and it is a mix of pavement, gravel, dirt and rocks all the way to the Labrador boarder. The Labrador Highway is in good shape. Watch out for the potholes and frost heaves. When we took this trip there was only 32 kilometers of gravel road left on the route (located near Port Hope Simpson) and they were in the process of paving it. Cell phone coverage is minimal to non existent, so we traveled with a Garmin In-Reach GPS for communication purposes. Another thing to keep in mind is that most of the tourist attractions do not open up until June 1st. We were a week early and missed out on Battle Harbour, and the National Historic Site in Red Bay. We did however see a number of icebergs.

I knew I could capture the Milky Way behind our camper and was hoping I could silhouette the trees in the foreground while maintaining a good Milky Way background. I used my headlamp to paint the trees and camper while the photo was being captured. In order to get as much of the Milky Way as possible, I used my head lamp on the last second of exposure. The lens used for the photo was a wide angle Canon RF 15-35/2.8 L IS USM lens. I mounted my camera with lens on a tripod using manual settings and I took a series of photos.

The White Rim Trail to me is the apex for a truck camper to do and you never really know if you are going to make all the way around with rigs of our size. In the distance is Candlestick Tower. Murphy's is about three-quarters around on the trail going and a good place for a turn around if you have to.

This was the final campsite, and was several miles up the alternative route into the Henry Mountains. We gave ourselves a half hour off the main route to find a campsite as it was getting late and dusk was coming. The road up into the Henry Mountains was near the limit of what our truck and camper combo could handle. There was lots of four low travel over rocks, washes, and mud. We went all the way up the road until this spot appeared. There were no campsites or even flat spots to pull off. At exactly half an hour, a tiny pull off on the right appeared, and we did a five-point turnaround to back into it. We then were hammered with an intense rainstorm, but enjoyed dinner and cards inside the camper. We woke up the next day to a clean truck, and a valley shrouded in clouds. I thought it was a pretty cool shot!

I left my home in Texas on December 1st and spent the night in Oklahoma. On December 2nd I drove to Denver, Colorado to pick up my camper. From Denver I drove to to Rocky Mountain National Park to spend four nights getting used to my new camper. On December 6th I drove to Ouray, Colorado to spend five nights at the KOA in order to have electricity to use my heater and charge camera batteries. Ouray had not had much snow before I arrived; however, did get several inches during my stay there. If I remember correctly, the temperature was four degrees on the morning I was to drive to New Mexico over the Million Dollar Highway (Co 550). I stopped for some lunch in Silverton because of a two-hour delay due to an overturned eighteen-wheeler loaded with new vehicles. After the accident was cleared from the road, I drove on to Albuquerque, New Mexico (my birthplace). I spent one night in Ft. Stockton, Texas before driving home to San Antonio.I took the submitted picture on the morning of December 10th with snow falling covering my camper. The two very happy campers in the picture are me and my travel buddy, Benjamin Bear.I highly recommend Ouray, Colorado as a great destination and suggest you visit Cascade Falls and hike the Perimeter Trail. Also, Ouray and surrounding area in late September offers spectacular fall color and sometimes snow for great photography opportunities.
