It is not uncommon to see eagles, moose, Dall sheep, and beluga whales, along with the occasional bore tide sweeping up the Arm with some hardy souls surfing it. I especially enjoy hiking the many trails along the Arm on autumn evenings, when the setting sun makes the fall foliage glow. I parked at a random pullout along the highway on once such evening to look for a geocache and decided to climb the cliff across the road for this sunset shot with my camper rig.

A truck camper is a great vehicle for aurora hunting because it is small enough to go anywhere and not be intrusive or attract too much attention, but so much more comfortable than sitting in a car all night, which is what most aurora chasers do. I parked among the planes one clear September night when the aurora forecast was promising, hoping for a great show. All I saw were a few faint green bands around 3 AM. But the morning dawned clear and beautiful and the fresh snow on the mountains with the fall foliage looked pretty good to me.

We had been looking for a truck camper that would fit in bed of truck without tailgate removal. Without wanting to wait for several months for a new one we found this slightly used 2019 in Destin, FL. My wife and I took off work and made 5 hour drive from Louisiana to pick it up. The main reason we wanted a truck camper is for our fishing adventures that often mean waking up at 2:30 am to drive to our favorite fishings spots. Having a truck camper that allows us to pull our boat and overnight will make sure we get the rest we need for a great day of fishing. We also are planning a future trip out west to the Rockies.

I picked a site called BLM Night Sky and attempted to take my truck camper, fondly known as The Beast, for her first big 4x4 adventure up some pretty rough roads to get there. Unfortunately, the road got a little more intense than I was prepared for and I ended up backing down to the big wide cutout in the picture and calling it a night there. It was a perfect spot to watch the sun set, hangout with my dogs and take in some really beautiful stars that night. Probably one of my favorite nights spent in my camper so far!

My wife and I have boondocked here a couple of times in the past. The river is between the Camper and the canyon wall, so you can hear the river flow. No cell phone service in most of the canyon, an added bonus! Our prior stop here in July 21, we stopped for the afternoon, in a summer thunderstorm, to take a break and fix dinner. When we got back, on the road that evening, we discovered flash floods had closed the canyon a few miles each side of us....so back to our spot, and camp until the road was opened the next day. One of our favorite overnights, not a single vehicle passed, no cell service, and a beautiful night!
