The trip is one I will never forget. It was just me and the dog. At times, I'd go days without even seeing another person. It was wonderful. The trip turned into a major bike mission. I rode 56 out of 60 days, covered 1,200+ miles and over 120,000 vertical feet. It will be hard to duplicate the experience.

This photo is taken en route to the parking area of the Painted Hills section of the park, which boasts a 360 degree panoramic viewing opportunity of the multi-colored rolling hills that make up the monument. Although the weather is normally quite nice in May, it was cold and windy that day, but since we keep gloves and mittens tucked away in the camper we were two of the few visitors that could enjoy the outing. And, the overcast conditions made for ideal picture taking. The nearest campground is about 40 miles from this site in Dayville. We stayed in a rustic woodsy RV park, the South Fork RV park, which is across the road from what appeared to be a very nice park, the Fish House Inn RV park. Both of these parks are about 10 miles from another must see area of the monument called the Sheep Rock unit, which also has its own unique amalgam of colorful strata and rock formations, reminiscent of the hoodoos in Utah, and has many great hiking trails.

Those three specifically were a Toyota Tacoma, a flat bottom boat and a truck camper. I never really had much growing up but the outdoors were special because it is the first place my dad, my uncles, and I got to really enjoy being together. So to say I’m blessed is an understatement. There’s nothing like seeing the sun come up out of the water in the morning and watching it go down in the water in the evening. I was first introduced to this place in 2016 and been in love with it ever since. We usually try to head to the island 4 or 5 times a year. I love to fish and my fiancé loves to look for seashells. It’s a win-win for both of us. The island is only accessible by the Cape Lookout Ferry Service in Davis. The ferry service goes above and beyond to get you on and off the island. If you are looking for a different place to go on vacation, try Cape Lookout Lighthouse. You’ll love it.

Both my wife and I have enjoyed the experience well beyond our already high expectations. We showed up, aired down and headed out to find we were the only ones there for most of that afternoon and evening until a couple more campers arrived. This picture was taken just after we chose our spot and started setting up for our 2 night stay. The weather was iffy, but we stayed dry, the rain avoided us through most of both days (late evenings were a different story). However, with the pandemic in full swing and travel not recommended, we felt there would be much fewer people on the road. We were correct, as there were only three other campers overnight that week. We were returning from a trip to Jasper, Alberta and planned to stop. I hiked the Wilcox Pass, which I had not done since I worked for Jasper National Park during the summer of 1973 as a student.A couple from Las Vegas, Nevada stopped in and talked to my wife while I was hiking (the US border having just recently opened). They had driven all the roads and checked out all the campsites and concluded that ours was the best one in the campground. They took the next best site next to ours. This is a great campground with great views, access to hiking and no services (other than a pit toilet and a water spigot nearby). It is a large reservoir formed by Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River as part of the Salt River Project. Located roughly 80 miles northeast of Phoenix in the Salt River Valley, Theodore Roosevelt is the largest lake or reservoir located entirely within the state of Arizona.I was fishing a Fire Fighter Charity Tournament and saw this spot near the lake’s dam. Prior to 2011 the road would take motorists across the the dam. Unfortunately after 9/11 that all changed and they built the bridge in the background of the photo across the lake in front of the dam. This location is also a part of the Arizona Trail. The Arizona Trail is an 800 mile hiking trail that runs from the Mexico to Utah borders.

Though our spot was just a mile or two from the main park road, it was very slow going for our big rig.

We found this spot at about 7000’, on a steep mountain ridge, just below the summit. We enjoyed a rare calm night, with great views. The following evening we were buffeted by strong winds and retreated to lower elevations the next morning.

We'd heard about Lake Koocanusa and Libby Montana. Driving the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway from the north we pulled into Peck Gulch Campground to have a look. We loved it immediately. Our first night in the campground another truck camper had this site. They left the next morning and we moved in. The first 2 days in the campground smoke from the forest fires to the north and west obscured the mountains down the lake. Our second night a storm came through with some wind and rain and cleared out the smoke. We woke the third day to this scene with the angry sky overhead.

Glacier exceeded our expectations. We planned to spend a week in Glacier and camped in Apgar campground for 7 days. Wanting more of Glacier we moved the the east side and into Two Medicine Campground. Our first night in the campground we had a very tight campsite in the trees. Walking around the campground we found this site was going to be vacated in 2 days. We moved in and were rewarded with this spectacular view every day. Mountain goats could be seen on the mountain every evening.

Our goal is to visit all 63 National Parks in the USA. We had left Guadalupe National Park and White Sands was next on the list. We camped the night before in the Lincoln National Forest outside of Cloudcroft, New Mexico. It snowed that morning so we had to drive down the mountain through the snow. We arrived at the park around 9 in the morning just at the sun started to come out. We had the park basically to ourselves which gave it a tranquil feeling. Just before we left around noon, a storm was heading towards the park creating more clouds. This park is surrounded by desert and sagebrush and then you come to this magnificent landscape.

The next morning we drove through the Valley of the Gods. This is a miniature Monument valley. We drove the 14 mile dirt rode which got rough in some spots, but every mile brought more photo opportunities. This is a great truck camper boondocking spot because there is not a bad view anywhere.

Aired down our tires 15 psi to drive out on the beach and set up our fishing. Had dinner and had our fishing gear out and in the water as the tide came in. Took this picture at about 6:30 and then settled in for the evening. At around 8:00 PM the waves - driven by Hurricane Larry offshore - started rolling over the beach and under our truck. At 8:30, the ranger came by and asked us to relocate into a parking lot for the rest of the night. Fun day with lots of adventure and new experiences for us and our new camper!

While there, we noticed how incredibly dark it was and thought it would be a great place to get a combination truck/camper/Milky Way photo. While taking a few photos, the Park Rangers were making regular trips up and down the road looking for overnight campers. I thought it could be cool to try a slow shutter image while they passed by which resulted in the light streaks over the road. We camped at a nearby KOA overnight and really enjoyed the incredible scenery of the area and the convenience the truck and camper provided us for the trip.

We were returning home from Pahrump, Nevada to our home in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, and decided to stop at as many National Parks on the way back as posable. For years we wanted to stop here, but were waylaid for one reason or another (mainly the pandemic last year shut it down the day we arrived). After getting here we found the weather to be 95 plus degrees with as much humidity. The best part was there was no electricity at he camp ground and they did not allow generators. There was not even a small breeze to help cool off the small camper. Needless to say, although it was a beautiful place, we decided that 2 days were enough and headed to the cool breezes of Padre Island. That's another picture.
