So, I toured Texas awaiting the second shot; Big Bend area, Gulf Coast, Panhandle, South Texas Plains, etc. I bought a Texas park pass and stayed in state parks for a week or so. That was fine, but not the first choice of truck campers. I began to visit state and national natural areas and forests. I spent five days in different locations in Sam Houston National Forest on Lake Conroe, where this picture was taken. It was a relaxing and great experience where I met several interesting people.

We switched campsites and scored stunning views for the 3 nights we stayed here. The site was virtually level, so we used our leveling blocks as stepping stones to get to dry land a few feet away. The weather turned out fine, so the water drained, and we had an awesome site for watching people, waves, sunsets, and dogs running on the beach.

So, even though snow was in the forecast, we booked at Black Rock Mountain State Park near Clayton, Georgia. And sure enough, it snowed on Christmas Day. Driving up the mountain was a tad nerve racking as it is a narrow windy road and, of course, not de-iced. But, four wheel drive is amazing and we enjoyed a very quiet Christmas as very few campers wanted to risk the drive up. It was absolutely beautiful and we couldn't have done it with anything else but a truck camper!

I got a flat tire almost right away. Then, I found out that I could not get at the spare without taking the truck camper off. I did not want to travel those backroad miles without a working spare, so delayed my adventure a night while I got the tire fixed. The next day I started back in and on the Centennial Divide Road, I found this nice flat pullout to take the camper off again, change the spare, and put it back under the truck. The author told how parts of the junctions could get rather confusing and also parts of the road were not very good when wet. After finding myself in some rancher’s irrigated field a ranch hand chased me down and nicely got me heading in the right direction. I headed up the mountain and came across a couple who were high centered so bad that their front tires were not on the ground. It was hot, so the day before we went to Toquerville Falls to swim in the steam and jump off the waterfalls to cool off. The road was difficult requiring a spotter with rock stacking and hole filling. Several times running boards still hit. In the end, it was totally worth it and I was the only camper there with a full kitchen, refrigerator and king-sized bed!

On a weekend journey to Flagstaff, Arizona, I hiked Humphries Peak, the tallest mountain in Arizona, and boondocked for a few nights on forest service roads. This photo was taken the morning after the hike while I was driving into town from my campsite. The dirt forest road was remarkable in the morning light and I stopped for this photo when I noticed an amazing view of snow-capped Humphries Peak.

I had always dreamed of seeing White Sands National Park in New Mexico and was finally able to make the trip happen a few days after my 29th birthday in February. The stark contrast of sparkling white sand against blue sky was mesmerizing. I spent the entire day there, occasionally walking back across the dunes to my little home to make a sandwich or grab a jacket. Unfortunately the park closes at dusk, but the dreamscape afternoon was well worth a night in a nearby Camp Cracker.

To top it all off we filled the cooler with whiting and had an amazing fish dinner back at the campground.

This campground could use a mile or two further off, but the beauty made up for the slight highway sound. When we arrived tired from a long day of driving around 6pm, which is later than we normally arrive for sites, the RV electric hookups were all taken. Disappointed, we kept driving around the campground and found another loop that was for tent only camping; just parking spaces for each site. A lot of these were open, so we choose this beautiful spot. Oh, the advantages of a truck camper. It was first come, first serve, no reservations, and only $5 with a senior pass. The formation is made up of 10 square miles of weathered Sherman granite, providing lots of space to explore. The general area was once used as a hideout for outlaws. Native Americans thought playful spirits piled up the boulders. There is access to rock climbing and a nature trail through the rocks. I would have loved to stay longer. No wonder the RV sites where all full.
