After scoring a great campsite at Goosenecks State Park, we went a few miles further east and found an awesome boondocking site along the Valley of the Gods road in the shadow of some pretty impressive monoliths. There were no other campers for at least a mile. We loved the spot so much that we spent two nights here, and did some eBike riding on our down day. We even broke out our propane fire pit to enjoy the evening solitude. It's a good road for truck campers, although our camper is so long, we did drag the trailer hitch at one spot.

I checked out the roads on my GPS and found some roads that took us to the right area. Six miles of interesting road later, we found ourselves at the foot of the canyon wall. This is only about 15 miles from Bryce Canyon (as the crow flies), which is why it looks similar.Once there, we got our rig level, and had a perfect spot to enjoy the evening and the next morning. Only one other vehicle passed us, or was anywhere nearby for the whole time we were up there. We would have loved to have spent another night there, but we had places to go and things to see.

It really doesn't get much better than this! This year we invited our friend Kathy Shank. This is her set up and her Arabian named Diamond. It was early April so the Thomas Canyon Campground was still closed for the winter season and completely snow covered. A few miles down the road just west of the campground I noticed another truck camper camped about 1/4 mile off the road along a good size creek. So I back tracked and to investigate. I’m so glad I did. Not only was it free camping, but no one else was there since the other truck camper was just pulling out as I was pulling in. The morning views were amazing as the sun peaked over the partially snow covered mountains. This is the spot I landed. There was a trail from my site leading down the short narrow path to the creek, so I could the flowing sound of water from my campsite. The night sky was glorious. It was still the winter season, so I nearly had the place to myself. The night air was nice and crisp and I had warm days in the 70s.

It was February, so I did not expect that Watchman Campground to be full. As you can guess, it was. So in a quick search I found Hurricane Cliffs Recreational Area just several miles down the road. This is free dispersed camping along the Virgin River that cuts deep into canyon area. The night skies were amazing and a full moon to boot! The entrance is easy right off UT 9. The area is vast from the city of La Verkin to Virgin with camping on both sides of the river. You just have to navigate to get to the other side. The area is full of hiking trails which lead down the steep canyon to the river below and lot of OHV activity as well. I was able to find this spot while hiking around the area and relocated to this spot the next day from my original site. That site was closer to the highway, so I was getting some noise from passing cars. It was peaceful and quiet except for a few passing side by sides during the day which wasn't much. I stayed here for three days until my reservation in Zion at Watchman Campground.

I took that road and immediately it turned into a very narrow, steep, rocky road in the pitch dark of night. The Legend 945 has a good amount of overhang making the departure angle less than ideal; there were many times I thought the overhang was going to get smashed off. There was a cliff to my left and the side of a mountain to my right with no way of backing down or turning around. At some points the road became so steep I lost traction with my Discover stt pro tires. The GPS's 15 minute ETA turned into a 45 minute trip! I finally found what looked like a lake and a campground in which I parked it for the night with not a soul in sight. This picture is what I woke up to. We were doing a three week cross county trip from WI to Washington state and back so we made a point to check it out on our way through. It did not disappoint. I was able to climb up to the top a very large rock next to our campsite to take the photo.

It was built in 1923 and it is the only remaining marsh bridge on Route 66. It is located west of Riverton in Kansas. We drove Route 66 through most of the states and we might do the others at a later date. We loved the trip.

She loves watching chipmunks, deer (she seems unaware that they are too big for her to catch), and bugs from her portable, foldable, mesh pen. Since Mojo was young, we've clicker-trained her to walk with a leash and harness, so she can enjoy the wilderness without disturbing wildlife. Well, OK, maybe a grasshopper or two is disturbed. On this photo walk, we both had a great time in a field of wildflowers.

Unfortunately, because of smoke from the Western fires we could barely see the Tetons across the lake. In an attempt to find someplace more breathable, we headed East to the Medicine Bow National Forest. Arriving late into the Snowy Range, the skies had cleared and we found a wonderful campsite. This photo is the view we had after waking up.

So instead we stayed in the Kellogg, Idaho area and traveled around exploring things and geocaching. We even did some zip lining in Wallace, Idaho. That was a blast. We love history so having this chance to make the short drive to Burke, Idaho and look at the old mine was on our list. This area was once a very busy area with major mining activities going on. Now, things set idle and beckon people to learn about its history.

We watched lots of YouTube videos because we didn't know what type of RV we wanted. One video we watched featured camping on The Wall outside of Badlands National Park. That particular video was extremely influential in our decision to buy a truck camper over any other type of RV. We added The Wall to our bucket list, and assumed it would be someplace we would visit during retirement. We never imagined that within the first six months of owning our truck camper that we would actually check it off of our bucket list. While planning our route to visit family for Thanksgiving we realized we would drive right by it. It was cold and we arrived at 11pm, making finding our way to the edge a little tricky. But it was totally worth it to wake up to these views, and to be the only people on the road and the first people in the park that morning.
