#301 - Linda McFarlandWhite Sands National Park, New Mexico2019 Ford F3502019 Northstar Laredo SSCamera Used - iPhone 10XWe took a three month road trip throughout the southwest. We started in April to avoid the extreme heat and fire season. On day 23 we headed to Sand Dunes National Park. The night before we stayed in Lincoln National Forest and woke up to an inch of snow and 33 degrees. (I’d say we avoided the heat that day!) The weather followed us to White Sands. The angry skies against the dunes with the mountains in the background made a striking picture. Taken before we started playing in the dunes!

We booked a night at the Lu Mil Vineyard in Elizabethtown, NC about a week before the grape harvest. We had just finished preparing dinner on our inside cooktop and were about to relax with dinner and a glass of “Taylor Divine”. Aside from the dinner and wine, our location turned into a picturesque setting with the Bundu-half awning deployed, the truck camper rig nearly silhouetted, and the sunset glimmering through the open screens of the pop up.

We watched the sun go down and up from the hot springs, then camped in the desert playa. Alvord Hot Springs is a funky welcoming camp on the edge of the Alvord desert salt flats in the middle of nowhere, and run by Rick and Amy from Tennessee! This area is known for hot springs, darkest skies in the US and absolute silence if you choose to listen. Camping out in the desert Playa is surreal, other worldly, Mad Max. It’s like camping on a sea of backed earth 5 miles wide and 7 miles long.

Upon realizing my truck camper was parked in an ideal spot to capture them together, I slowly maneuvered in a large circle so that I did not disturb them and cause them to change position. Little did we know that our 2017 half ton pickup would fail us and we would be forced to get a new truck. We were blessed with a great deal on a 3500 series truck and moved forward with a new 2021 Cirrus 820 Truck Camper. Our dreams were coming true. Our trip from NC to national parks in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota for 18 days was the longest we had been away from our 4 children and spouses, besides the 8 grandchildren and our two dogs. The trip was amazing. This picture was taken after we left BLM land near the Grand Tetons. I stopped the truck to check for our bikes being loose on the mount and realized what a great shot this might be with the mountains, colorful trees and our 2021 Cirrus 820.

Our dreams were coming true. This trip with the camper was our 4th or 5th with our new rig. We decided to try private land through HiCamp. The challenge was getting our entire new rig up a very steep ridge to 3800 feet on just a trail. It took four wheel drive and a lot of luck to get to the top of the ridge. We arrived and were the only ones on this ridge top for three days and nights with over 40 mph winds the first night. It was a challenge for us newbies as well. The photo was taken the second night as the sun went down with the view in the background.

After a spring and summer that was turned upside down due to myself needing surgery, our plans were pushed almost 6 months. Two months after my surgery I was given the green light to travel short distance and this allowed us to finally get started with our trip! We took a one month trip to work out all the kinks with our custom flat deck and solar system, which there were many! We spent the majority of our time in the Kananaskis and Canmore area to keep travel to a minimum and really enjoy the area as it is one of the most beautiful in Canada. We are now moving to full time living for the winter!

Things have changed over that time. I remember early on when we decide to going camping over the coming weekend it was through in the camp box, ice chest, tent and sleeping bags. There was always a great place to set up camp without a reservation. Now days when we are camping in a new location we look for the best camp in the park so we can reserve it the next time come. We now plan and reserve our sites 6 or 9 months in advance depending on the state. When a favorite site becomes open for the dates we are looking to go camping I’m online at the state park’s website ready to reserve the minute the site is available to reserve. I have used this method for many years and have camped in the best site in one camp for 20 years straight. This was the first year I was lucky enough to reserve the site in my pictures. We had chairs on the beach and by our campfire. Always looking for that great sunset photo.

I purchased a 1984 model 580 Lance Camper and spent two months renovating/remodeling it to turn it into a home, office, recording studio, and bedroom for me and my rescue dog 'Checkers' who is in the photo with my camper.I've rescued and rehabilitated 12 dogs over the past 6 years and my very first rescue 'teddy' passed away in 2018. He would travel with me everywhere across California and my dream was to take him to all the National Parks in an RV or camper one day. Unfortunately, he passed away suddenly in 2018. 'Checkers' came along into my life in 2019 after his elderly owner passed away. The owner’s son was going to put Checkers in the pound, but I stepped in and decided to keep him. He has been my travel companion ever since. We have travelled all across the US from the West Coast to the East Coast. This year alone we have travelled over 7500 miles.Teddy is still with me, I called my camper 'The Teddy Express' in honor of him and all rescue dogs.
