#200 - Mike BrandlBoyds Campground, Stock Island in the Keys, Florida2014 Ford F2502013 Lance 865Camera Used - DJI Mavic AirOur summer trip to Florida Keys started with five days at Boyds Campground on Stock island. It is only a bike ride away from the Key West downtown district. While taking some aerial footage with the DJI Mavic I snapped this picture of our home for the week. Boyds is a really nice professional campground and I would recommend it to any type of camper interested in going to Key West. Part two of the trip was five more days north at Key Largo campground. Being on the water and towing our boat with us on the trip was is the #1 reason we have a truck camper!

It is a beautiful campground deep in the woods, but walking distance to the beach. There is a beautiful large lake on the property that has kayak rentals. The campground has a little of everything; biking trails, hiking trails, beach and lake activities. Great place.

#204 - David RomeroGuadalupe National Park, Texas2017 Ram 25002017 Cirrus 820Camera Used - DJI Mavic AirThe only real event on the way in was finding out how well my brakes worked. I topped a hill and proceeded down the other side about ten miles north of the Guadalupe National park primitive campsite.Out of nowhere a pack of deer jumped the guard rail and decided to make their crossing. With a heavy foot, I aggressively applied the brakes. The truck and camper kept their composure and were very stable, thankfully. All was well and I believed we would clear the pack of deer until a lingering deer decide to hop the guard rail and play catch up to the pack. With white knuckles and an AWH! SHIT! I embraced for impact. My wife was so caught up in the breaking, tire noise, equipment shifting noise and the appearance of this pack of deer that she said absolutely nothing. I could see her bracing for impact also. As the truck quickly decelerating and hearing all of the stuff in the back seat and some items in the camper move forward, it was one of those moments of let’s make it through this event.By the grace of a mightier power that last straggler picked up its trot to an all out run. We merely grazed its rump like wiping its rear. So after a pull over to evaluate what had just happened, we took a five minute break. We walked around the rig and with a little dirt rubbed off the bumper and front passenger’s fender. There was no harm to the rig. All was well. We were off again. Quite a silent trip from that moment on until we arrived at the site. Our plans were to stay in this Guadalupe primitive site as we had read that they had some great hiking trails in the area. As it turns out the park had multiple hiking trails of various distance and difficulty. We enjoyed about a two mile hike into Devil's Hall and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The sight was outstanding. The trails were great. The bathrooms were a little dated, but very clean and maintained. Overall it was a great stay over.

From there we took the ferry across to Newfoundland where we spent about a month before returning to mainland Canada. It was a nice bay with good kayaking and an island a quarter mile off shore to visit. I spent two days relaxing here. It's about eighteen miles of dirt road with a 4x4 accent to get away from the highway. Then, there’s one more steep steep hill to get up and over requiring four wheel drive low, to get to my spot.

I set up a good base camp to get out on foot and explore nooks and crannies of the area in search of Anasazi ruins. Scouring on foot for a couple days, we made some amazing discoveries.

These are popular locations for western Canadians wanting to enjoy some off-road activities that don't involve snow and ice. We pulled the UTV down on a 14-foot long singe axle trailer with a 24 by 30 inch box running across the width of the trailer at the front. This provided more than enough storage for extra fuel, propane, lounge chairs, tables and other miscellaneous items. This trip proved to us that we don't need a lot of money or the fanciest toys to have fun camping. The truck is just a reliable old two wheel drive three-quarter ton diesel with a standard transmission. The camper is a very comfortable like-new unit that we bought used for about one third of its original purchase cost. All in all, including the truck, trailer and UTV, we have a capital cost of about $26,000 US dollars. For our winter getaways, this is all we need.We found out about these Arizona off-road opportunities from a family member who owns a house in Maricopa. Unlike them, we have more fun traveling around and stopping whenever we see something interesting to explore. We will definitely be doing more vacations like this in the future.

I use Google Maps satellite view to find campsites like this. Look at your surroundings from high above. Is there a forest road or BLM route nearby? Are there unnamed open routes in the area? It doesn't always pan out. Sometimes the road is too treacherous and I have to turn around. But when it does, the reward is amazing.

We are calling it our midlife retirement. Our first big trip was from Vermont to South Dakota. This photo was taken in the Badlands National Park. Kevin had dropped me off so that I could hike. As I completed the hike and reached the trailhead, he was there waiting for me with Rosie The Big Brown Truck. I had to take this quick photo. She looked so beautiful with the mountains and sunflowers!

Before we took the leap, we rented this sweet little set up from Drop Top Campers in Albany, Oregon. For a week, we traveled the coast of Oregon, finding great campsites and meeting beautiful people. This photo was taken on my 43rd birthday up in the Deshutes National Forest over looking Broken Top Mountain. It was an awesome spot. We celebrated with store bought cheesecake and Chardonnay. In the morning there was a light coating of snow and mountain lion prints just a few feet away from the camper. We were sold on where a truck camper could take us. We made the phone call to order our own Northstar from this very spot.

My three entries are from my travels attributed to his memory. I was driving along on my way to meet some friends in Salt Lake City, taking the long way around as I enjoy, and came across a group of cowboys on a large cattle drive. Seeing my Texas plates, truck camper and my cowboy boots, one of the cowboys stopped and we talked for a bit. Come to find out they were on mile 20 of their drive. Long live the American rancher.

I made my first cross country drive from Pennsylvania to Arizona in December 2018 to escape the snow for the winter. On my drive, I was hunting for some Route 66 nostalgia. I needed to make a stop for fuel and I stumbled across this Route 66 sign just after sunset in Elk City, Oklahoma. This made a good spot to stretch my legs for a bit and pose the truck to get a cool picture commemorating my trip.

My son Kevin, and I camped off Forest Road 768 on July 4th, 2019 in Western Saguache Ranger District, Rio Grande National Forest, Colorado, adjacent to the Continental Divide. We had the entire area to ourselves for four full days. That was an amazing place for a father and son trip. The campsite was 10,078 feet elevation, and on the morning of the 4th, we awoke to a frosty 31 degrees F. This is what we always search for when boondock camping in Colorado's National Forests. This area has numerous similar spots tucked away just off the main forest roads. You can camp with a campfire provided there's an existing fire ring or fire pit. The clear nights at this elevation are just breathtaking.
