We finally bought a Lance truck camper in the winter of last year. We had a lot of busy months, but finally at the end of August we had a free weekend and we got there on a Saturday morning. So, we bought our pass and went out. I was so excited to spend the afternoon on the beach. Finally around 10pm we moved over to what they call the bullpen to sleep for the night. I was so wound up and ready to wake up on the beach I left the door open all night and listened to the waves. Finally when I saw the first sign of light I was up and out to see it. This is the first picture I ever took of my rig on the beach. This one I will always remember. I have only made it back to the beach one time since then and I can’t what to go back. We camp a lot of other places around the Maryland and Pennsylvania area, but Assateague is my favorite.

At times that was more technical then the pass itself. This picture was cresting close to the top of the mountain. Although the picture doesn't show it there was a rock wall at about a 30 degree incline. We had to go up and over in order to get here. My wife was so scared she got out and walked as I dropped into four-wheel low and crawled my way up and over to where the truck sits. The view was worth it.

Despite the longer drive days, the truck loved the cooler temperatures of Alaska. The drive into Valdez, Alaska is easily one of our top five drives in all of the 20,000+ miles we've driven through North America. The scenery becomes more and more spectacular the closer you get to the town. We couldn't drive more than a handful of miles without pulling over to take in the view, especially this view of Horsetail Falls!

#428 - Lindsay HarveyDalton Highway, Alaska2002 Ford F-2502004 Lance Lite 845Camera Used - Canon 80dDriving the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Deadhorse was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, drives we have completed in over 14,000 miles of driving the US and Canada. While the road is a mixture of dirt, gravel and stretches of pavement (with potholes and frost heaves!) the drive itself is a journey for the soul. As you travel north you experience changes in landscape, vegetation and wildlife that make you feel as though you are traveling in a different world. With the midnight sun lighting the way, we followed the Alaskan Pipeline to it's source along Prudhoe Bay at the top of the world. For us, the Dalton Highway was necessary as it led to the beginning of our journey to drive from the top of Alaska to the bottom of Argentina. It was a highway leading to our destiny. And, although we experienced a tire blow out and drove back somewhat anxious and aware that the next blowout would leave us stranded, the highway became our favorite drive in America.

You can park you rig literally within 10' of the water. Although on the southwest side of the lake there is a newly upgraded campground with very nice vaulted toilets and water. We discovered that nearby was this old gas station, which had been restored and preserved. This is one of the original Shell gas stations built in the 1930s and one of the last remaining of its kind in the country. It sits in the corner of a residential neighborhood. While the pumps no longer work, anyone can drive right up to get a close look. It was such a fun window into the past, and we were able to peer inside the locked shell building, which housed antique memorabilia and insignias related to gas stations and Shell Oil. Surprisingly enough, we were the only visitors on this particular Wednesday morning and seized the opportunity to take some fun shots of our truck camper in an old-timey service station!

We went here on our way home from a five month 12000 mile trip from southern Arizona to Alaska. There was a beautiful sunset over the Beartooths and a sunrise the next morning. Two hours after sunrise two inches of snow were on the ground. Our 865 has windows that wrap all around the back side, which is perfect for places like this. Just sit back, watch it snow, and enjoy your coffee.

I saw an Iron Ranger, filled out my envelope, inserted my $6 and slowly worked my way across the Canyon rocks to this fantastic campsite. We setup and stayed there a couple days taking in these gorgeous views and never saw another camper. This place really left lasting and almost spiritual effect me.

We had an adult beverage while sitting in front of our rig to get out of the wind. As the shadows from the clouds and rain showers raced across the landscape, I stood up and turned around to head back to the cooler and oh my goodness! Look at the rainbows! This was without doubt the most intense rainbow I have ever seen. I grabbed my camera and shot off a bunch of images framing our camper among the sagebrush and mountains. It pays to look the other way now and then!

Overnight brought an accumulation of 10 inches of snow, with unsafe road conditions, so we hunkered down for 48 hours to wait out the storm. Comfort food, Netflix, and lots of propane were consumed. After the snow passed, we watched people struggling in cars and RVs to unbury themselves. We really appreciated the fact that our trusty truck camper had no problem climbing out over the snow. Truck campers are versatile and give us the freedom to venture into questionable terrain and

After making our way across the interior, we took our time coming down the coast. We enjoyed exploring as many seaside towns as we could and loved seeing all the lighthouses along the way. While camping in the area, we discovered this cove in Southport, Maine. It had a small lighthouse on private property. We were able to position ourselves along this public beach. Relaxing here, we ate dinner and watched the sunset and the lighthouse in full operation from the comfort of our little camper home.

When we do not travel with the camper we take it off the truck, keep it at our farm and camp some nights there. My Dad spent his retirement years building the property into a park-like setting with five ponds, over a thousand trees planted and 40+ acres of mowed grass! The rest of the property is rented to a local crop farmer. The picture was at sunrise in late July. The pond was occupied by Canadian Geese and Whitetail Deer grazed in the field next to us. The star of the show were two pairs of Sandhill Cranes as they searched the fields for their breakfast. Sunrise was spectacular on the old Oaks over the camper. So many of the calendar pictures seem to be of the grand landscapes in the western part of the country. I thought this contrasted with the lush green of the upper Midwest and a different kind of beauty!

The Keweenaw Rocket Range is a very remote spot ten miles off any paved road. The trails into the area are logging roads and ATV trails. The last two miles were very tight, literally an inch or two of clearance in many spots. You'd never get in there with a hard side truck camper. But it is worth the effort. It is the northern most spot you can be at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, right on the shore of Lake Superior and looking out at the lighthouse on Manitou Island. This shot is not that spectacular and really doesn't do the location justice. A drone would have been the way to go, but I don't have one of those. I think the picture is special because of the effort to get there and uniqueness of the spot. From Wikipedia: The Keweenaw Rocket Range was an isolated launch pad located in U.S. state of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. It was used between 1964 and 1971 for launching rockets for meteorological data collection. NASA, along with the University of Michigan, conducted the project under the lead of Dr. Harold Allen. To think that my truck was parked in the same spot Nasa was launching rockets from in the late 60s!
