We explored New York's only National Forest, the Finger Lakes National Forest, on our way to day-hike the South Slope Trail. In the distance is Seneca Lake.

#303 - Matt MisickaFinger Lakes Region, New York2013 Ford F250 2012 Hallmark Ute Camera Used - iPhone 8 On a week-long late September trip through the Finger Lakes Region of New York, we stopped for a night at a Harvest Hosts winery. After a productive visit to the tasting room, we set up the camper and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Our only visitor during the evening was this photogenic gal (yes, even cows can have horns). I wish I could say more about the winery, but being discrete is part of the agreement that comes with a Harvest Hosts membership. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through the vineyard that evening and sampling some of the grape varieties that will become next year's award winning wines. The Finger Lakes Region and its wineries, breweries, farms and parks were very dog-on-a-leash-friendly. Two of the establishments we visited even allowed us to bring our (reasonably) well-behaved 8 year old Labrador Retriever into their businesses. It’s definitely a return destination in the future.

This shot was taken in Flin Flon, Manitoba outside of their mining museum. The character is Flintabbaty Flonatin or locally known as “Flinty”, a character the Town Flin Flon was named after by Tom Creighton. He was a prospector who discovered copper in the area around 1927.

The photo was taken just before our emergency brake piled up. We managed to get back home, fixed, and back on the road. This trip we pulled our trailer with the canoe. Sometimes we travel untied to the trailer and depend on our 16' inflatable Sea Eagle kayak that we store behind the passenger’s seat in the truck to get us on the water.

We canoed many miles along the historic fur trade routes. It was a quiet campground. We loved it having no power, no cell coverage and no radio coverage. We discovered many different campgrounds while spending the summer traveling northern Manitoba. All were beautiful, the fishing was great, and there were good roads.

Access to Whittier by land is through the Anton Anderson Tunnel (2.5 miles) that was built back in 1943. Mammoth Campground was the only campground that had any open sites when we arrived. All the other campgrounds were full until the following week. This was one of the many night shots I took during our 2018 Journey. There was a good reflected light from the moon and it looked rather good.

Our primary destinations were along I-40 in New Mexico and Arizona, allowing us to travel Historic Route 66 through those states. We had a lot of fun driving through the many quaint communities along Route 66. We enjoyed the buildings and cheesy signage (including Burma Shave) that harkened back to before the Interstate bypassed the communities.In one town, Route 66 ended at a maintenance yard. Since we had to turn around and there was a painted sign on the road, we took advantage of no other traffic and documented our travel on that great roadway.

Through this research, we discovered that his grandparents' graves never had a headstone installed. This resulted in a gathering of cousins, via email, to rally funds and put us in contact with a cousin my husband had never gotten the chance to meet before. A new friendship was made and we set out this summer to meet him. Lucky for us, he lives in the middle of a beautiful Colorado valley. We got to boondock in his front yard. We enjoyed the visit and the beautiful scenery. Even though this isn't a beautiful mountain picture, I think the sparseness and the colors are pretty.

I went home through Montana on the I-15 to southern California. 7,000 miles in 31 days and 26 states.

The Mulberry River is a popular paddle sports destination. In the early spring it is too cold to draw a big crowd, which makes it the ideal camping spot for my wife, our two black labs and myself. We like the CampLite because it’s lightweight helps us maintain our tow ability to bring along our Jeep. Jeeping in the Ozarks is a must if you are into the off-road sports.

We could have stayed there forever, or at least until first snowfall!

Apparently it was used at Burning Man, and the owner was going to store it at a local ranch, but ran into some issues with the BLM. As a youngster she sat in a chair in front of the Lodge drawing pictures of Lake Louise. We discovered that there is also a Lake Louise State Park in Alaska. We drove 17 miles of frost heave highway for an hour to get there and camp for the night. On the way home we spent a night at Mount Rainer National Park and discovered there was a Louise Lake there as well. When we got out to see the lake, we took this picture of our camper with the snow covered mountains above. I’m not sure why Louise is such a popular name for lakes.

Our goal was to retrace the steps his family took to get to where they are now. We decided to focus on the lives starting with his 4x great grandparents and working our way down his family line following their moves around the country. This took us from Virginia to Indiana to Kansas to Colorado to Nebraska.We spent a lot of time in cemeteries looking for family graves and driving around following clues we read online on where the old family homesteads and long gone family homes originally stood. We learned a lot about his family's ancestry on this trip. Family history came alive being able to actually explore the places they lived and discovering their final resting places. In the picture above, we were exploring a the ruins of a possible family home and barn. Thank goodness we had a truck camper and so were able to drive across the field to get to it easily. It wouldn't have been possible dragging a trailer across the muddy field.

We were tracing the lives of my husband's family. This particular stop was to find the graves of his great grandparents. He was named for his great grandfather, but didn't know a whole lot about him. This trip helped bring these people to life for us as we were able to see their town, find their old rock home, and locate their graves. With all the time we spent driving through cemeteries it sure was nice to have a truck camper!

After shipping the truck around the Darrien Gap we picked the truck up in Cartagena, Colombia and started towards Bogota. W e chose to drive through the mountains and camped here in Canyon del Chicamocha. It is the second deepest worldwide. This picture is taken above the canyon (about 3000 meters).

This time we hiked both the upper and lower falls trails and got in about three miles of hiking. It was a beautiful 68 degree day with only 48% humidity. The week prior it was 89 degrees with 86% humidity. It looks like fall is officially here.
