This was on the way home at the mouth of the Klamath River where it goes into the ocean. I turned down a steep road to a vista point that was at the top of a mountain. It was a good thing that I was in a truck camper as there was a sign that said no trailers on the road. We stopped here for lunch and I just had to take a picture.

The road was basically a sand pit but Ken was able to keep the Tundra going. We were able to get to the pictographs and see some of the most beautiful cactus flowers ever. We decided to camp there. We were treated to a short hike up to a view point where we could see all the way north to the Grand Canyon of the San Rafael River. This spot was not on our itinerary. It was just a lucky pick after seeing it mentioned in a guide book. I’m not sure if a solid sided truck camper could get through the tunnel, so we are glad to be so agile!

We experienced two flash floods. It was really scary but also awesome watching from our safe perch. We knew that they happen but had never been in one before. There was so much water coming over the canyon walls, a raging torrent, and then nothing. We had to slog through water on our hike out. Big fun.

It was so windy this night that it covered up our tracks in the sand. The view from camp was expansive. In the morning we made our way to Dutchman's Arch. This part of the San Rafael Swell is hard to access. You have to get under I-70 through small four wheel drive tunnels. Our rig would not fit through one of them but we found some that we were able to pass through.

#208 - Van RebstockBorrego Springs, California2006 Toyota Tundra2001 Four Wheel HawkCamera Used - iPhoneThis was my first time exploring the Borrego Springs area. My friend's parents live there, and he told me all of the cool spots to check out. On this particular day, I was going to see Font's Point, but Mother Nature had different plans. As I headed towards my destination a thunderstorm started to form, and I determined that driving through a floodplain might not be the best idea if a flash flood suddenly occurred. I instead decided to drive onto a nearby dry lakebed to see how the storm developed. I snapped this photo right in the middle of the lake. About five seconds later heard the first loud rumble of thunder. I started heading back towards the main road and by the time I arrived the storm was hitting full force. Overall it was a great humbling experience reminding me of the power of nature.

Having worked there years ago in both summer and winter seasons, we have been fortunate to know it in quieter times, and it holds many memories. Yet when we return from time to time, we usually come away disappointed, hating the crowds that seem to be everywhere, even in the off-seasons. We love the park, but we hate the crowds. This summer, after enjoying the eclipse in central Idaho, we realized that our most direct route home was to drive through Yellowstone. We decided to compensate for the crowds by seeking out solitary places at dawn and sunset. This shot was taken in Hayden Valley one evening. There was a grizzly jam at the north end of the valley, and we drove right on past. We've seen grizzlies in Hayden Valley before. We were looking instead for a quiet spot to take our chairs down to the river and watch the sunset. We found it here. The chairs (and my husband) are visible in the lower left corner.

While sitting around the fire that night, I was looking over the maps and noticed the small dirt road that passed our campsite appeared to wind its way into the National Park.Turns out BLM RD378 (Willow Springs) is one of two alternate entrances into the park. We're always looking for excuses to avoid pavement, and this was a more direct route to boot! The washes and slickrock ledges on the BLM portion of the road made for a fun morning and a far more dramatic entry into Arches than the main gate.

I found what looked like a high spot and we setup camp in the rain. Just after we got the top popped, the rain subsided and a friendly local (our new neighbor for the night) wandered over and we chatted over a couple cold beers from our refrigerator. He ensured us that the area was safe and that we were welcome to stay, but suggested another spot a few hundred yards away, mentioning something about flooding. There was a tiny creek flowing nearby, but it didn't strike us as a threat. After he went back to tending his animals (we were surrounded by cows, horses, chickens, and ducks) this rainbow appeared as the sun burned the clouds away.Engrossed in the beauty of our new home, wildly snapping pictures, we noticed much later than usual how the few puddles hadn't so much dried up as gotten deeper. While we were enjoying the spot, the creek had rapidly risen. When we finally cried uncle and decided to move camp the water under our truck was nearly calf deep at the back steps. We setup not too far away and enjoyed a quiet night among the animals, with the island volcano Volcan Conception looking over us from the waters of the lake. All for the cost of a Nicaraguan beer.

We traveled April 1 to June 29, 2017 with two adults and two dogs. We encountered snow, rain, ice, rain and sun. We purchased our camper without seeing it. This is the truck camper we wanted and we enjoy the new adventures every day. This is a shot on the Alaska Highway looking at Kluane National Park.

We parked right across from the Athabasca Glacier. It was a chilly night, but we kept toasty warm and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

This year we decided to fill in the blank spot on our map, gritted our teeth and went into the Kansas prairie. Boy, were we surprised! We enjoyed the Tall Grass National Preserve, Mushroom Rock State Park (the state's smallest park at only five acres) and finally, the coup de grace, Monument Rocks in west central Kansas. The monuments and arches are on private property, but the owners allow access to the area. There are even signs pointing the way. It is otherworldly to drive through the prairie and then come upon this scene. When I show the pictures to others, the response is always an incredulous,

This road and some rainy weather is responsible for the messy appearance of our rig. We followed a side road of the Richardson Highway that ran directly toward the beautiful Gulkana Glacier. The road runs for several miles through a wide, flat plain that in mid-August was covered with bright red and yellow wildflowers.

All of the first come, first serve campsites were already taken. I stopped at the first pull-out and spent the night. The next morning I proceeded up the road passing numerous other campers. Fourteen miles in, the last quarter-mile required four wheel drive low. Finally, at the summit of Vinegar Hill I was the second person to make camp. The summit was at 8,017-feet and had a great view. For the next four days, we waited as a few more hearty campers arrived. Finally on August 21, 2017 at 10:23am the black sun appeared, and then the corona appeared. It was a magical two minutes.

This June my son and I stopped by again on the way out to Denver to meet some friends flying in from Germany. It had just rained earlier in the day and the dirt roads were slick. On the way there, with a high crown and deep ditches in some spots, I feared sliding off and getting stuck, delaying our plans to pick up friends at the airport. My new Nissan truck kept us on track, even though it was sideways at times. We got to our destination and then back to paved roads on time to continue our journey.
