When road tripping, we never make reservations, preferring to play it by ear and follow our own interests and whims. We ended up in the mountains of the Dixie National Forest and pulled into a small roadside campground. We were the only people there for several hours until an RV with a family from Germany arrived. We all got to know each other around a campfire that night and enjoyed some beers, laughs and the camaraderie of fellow travelers. It was a wonderful night. The kind you can only experience while camping.

We started in Lincoln, Nebraska and spent the first night in Thedford, Nebraska at a city park with free water and electricity. While in Thedford I posted my weekend plans on social media, indicating we were going to camp the next night in Badlands National Park at a boondocking campground. A camper from Pennsylvania told me he was there a couple of weeks ago, but stayed just outside the park on the northwest side on a cliff that overlooked the Badlands. He stayed with a couple other campers for free. The next day we ate lunch in Rapid City at Firehouse Brewing Company and then drove to the Badlands to set up camp. I missed my intended turn, but could still get to the campground through the main entrance, however it was going to cost $20 or $25 to enter the park. My intentions for the trip were free camping since we were spending big money on food. However, about half a mile north of the park entrance, I noticed several campers parked up on a ridge about a quarter mile east of the highway, which was the location the guy from Pennsylvania told me about. We turned around, drove to the site, and set up camp for the second night on the ridge overlooking the Badlands, which is where the picture was taken. We had bighorn sheep come right up to the camper and then bed down for the night on the ridge just below us . The picture is the sunrise over the Badlands the following morning. We left later that morning, drove to Devils Tower Wyoming, and then onto Hartville, Wyoming to eat at Miners and Stockmen's Steakhouse and Spirits. We spent the third night just south of Hartville at Grayrocks Reservoir where we once again boondocked for the night. The next day we drove back to Lincoln. The total mileage for the trip (to visit two restaurants) was 1563 miles.

The timing was fantastic and we got some absolutely epic powder conditions followed by clear skies with great snow conditions. The camper served as a great basecamp to warm up and hang out after a few runs, and we even camped at the park one night (for free). I snapped this picture at the end of a particularly good day.

We were told it would be a week before work would begin so we took off to Sajama National Park to continue exploring while we waited for the time to pass.Sajama National Park holds the Sajama Volcano which is the tallest peak in the high altitude country at over 20,000 feet in elevation. We couldn't drive more than a few miles without stopping for photo shoots, most of which included our truck and camper. Each time we stopped, our jaws dropped as we stared at this incredible mountain. The glaciers and snow, rocks and crevices changed with each turn of the wheel and we admired its beauty with each stop. Finally, after eight months of hot weather, our Alaskan Camper felt at home at the cold, high altitudes of Bolivia. This was another sign that we were right where we should be.

It ended up being a nine-hour drive, but we found a nice secluded camp spot, fed and watered the kids, fired up the Weber and had a nice dinner of grilled salmon and asparagus with a cold bottle of wine. The next morning we had a leisurely breakfast, packed up and headed towards Bullfrog stopping along the way snapping pictures and admiring the beauty around us. This shot was done to show the enormity of the red walls we were surrounded by.

It is a 1.5 kilometer long sandy beach backed by fragile marram grass-covered dunes protected by boardwalks. Low tide exposes sand flats; then the hot sand warms the water. There is also a spot for dry camping for $20. We went on a recommendation by a friend. The beach and views did not disappoint. This stop was part of our one month long Staycation of traveling the shoreline of our own beautiful province and staying at several provincial campgrounds along the way. This was on our last day of climbing in the area, so we drove north with hopes of finding a good beach to camp nearby, before crossing into Canada the next day. What we discovered was Douglas Hill OHV area that allowed up to fourteen days of free camping on a beautiful peninsula, fully equipped with a pit toilet and primitive boat launch. We found a perfect grassy campsite at the very tip of the peninsula, and enjoyed the sunny afternoon by the lake, followed by a magical sunset.

For our first night in town, we drove down to one of the most famous off-road areas nearby; Kane Springs Road. The paved road follows the Colorado River for a little ways before forking south, following Kane Springs Creek. At this point, the road becomes dirt and many of the tall sandstone walls lining the canyon are popular rock climbs. Dozens of Jeeps and other 4x4 vehicles use this rough road to access some of Moab's gnarliest terrain. Many people take their mountain bikes down there to access the world famous Amasa back trail. We had imagined that much of that road, which is on BLM land, would provide numerous options for free camping. But the popularity of Moab comes at a cost. All the historically free pull-outs/campsites have now been turned into official BLM campgrounds with a fee. We drove to the very end of the road, and finally found a small pull-out to spend the night. Any further than that and we would have needed higher clearance and a much more agile vehicle. In the end it was a lot of fun driving through the canyon and across Kane Springs Creek in this boondocking adventure. That's Moab for you!

On our cross-country road trip, Devils Tower had been a major climbing objective since day one. We managed to contain our excitemen and stress for the first few months, but when we drove to the tower last August, and we saw it from the hills, miles away, it hit us. We were about to climb to the top of that huge tower raising out of the plains of eastern Wyoming. As we arrived, we drove straight to the visitor center to inquire about the current rock climbing closures on the tower (due to falcon nesting). The route we had planned to climb was closed, so we had to decide on a different way to achieve the summit the next day. We drove to the overlook, took some pictures with the truck and the tower, and set up camp for the night. Neither of us slept very well and we woke up before sunrise to get an early start in hopes of avoiding afternoon thunderstorms. We successfully made it to the top of Devils Tower, and it is definitely one of our biggest accomplishments of the trip.
