We drove to the Bayfield Pier and thought we would spend the night there. We went for a short drive after dinner and saw an unmarked two track heading north. We are always up for an adventure, so took the road and after about 1/4 mile the road opened up on a rocky beach with an amazing view of the Northumberland Strait. What a treat to watch the sunset on one end of the beach and sunrise on the other! We were up early to see the sun peak out. There is nothing like a truck camper for exploring and finding out of the way places to camp. It was one of our favorite nights on the trip.

It was several hours back to a dealer and the truck seemed to be running fine so we pushed forward. The trail was beautiful. We turned off for the 10K drive on the gravel road to Meat Cove. We arrived about 2pm and they had two sites left - one that would work for our truck camper! It was such a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise over the ocean. After many great stops along the way from New Hampshire, we stopped at Thunder Basin Ford in Gillette, Wyoming for an oil change. There we met a good man named Troy who is an Engineer for General Electric, and was also waiting for his Ford truck to be serviced. He suggested a special northern route for us to enter Yellowstone National Park. We arrived in Cooke City, Montana late and I asked Brooke to pick a place to eat. She picked The Bistro. When Brooke, Jake, and I were done we asked the counter person for advice on an economical camp site. We ended up entering this spot well after sunset and encountered our first Bison with headlights on! My kids and I were able to watch the Bison for quite a while before camping in the beautiful location in our photo.

It is the largest black desert in Europe.  It is always a challenge to cross Iceland. Summertime is your best bet.  My wife and I were really lucky and drove across Sprengisandur during last year's summer. The name Sprengisandur is difficult to translate, as it refers to the old time travel method on horses. For many travelers it was a race to reach from the last green grass to the next green grass across the highland.  Therefore, stamina is a major factor, otherwise your horses collapses.  So the direct translation would be; the collapse desert. Due to weather we decided to camp on this lonely path and experience the quiet desert. Thvermodur, the mountain in the background, is close to Nyidalur. That is a oasis in this desert.

In the town of Lone Pine, we went to the visitor center to get a map. While talking to a ranger we learned that it was the Western Film Festival weekend. Alabama Hills is where many old time westerns, as well as recent movies, have been filmed. Yikes, there are going to be thousands of people there! She told us to keep driving up Movie Road until we got out of the highlighted area on the map, to get to solitude. Okay, we will give it a try.We did experience many people along the first part of Movie Road and the many roads branching off from it. A little further on there were fewer people and cars. It was looking more like the Alabama Hills I had been imagining. We found a spot down a small road and camped for the night. It was so awesome and so beautiful; the rocks, geology, the night sky, very peaceful and quiet, more than what I had expected for my first Alabama Hills jaunt!

The next morning we woke to clearing skies, amazing cloud effects and sunshine, with beautiful mirror-smooth reflections on the water. I was immediately up and out on our inflatable kayak, paddling in a dance among reflected mountains. I could not resist this shot taken from the kayak.

This is a very remote, dark area well suited to night photography; outstanding scenery in the daytime, too. The image was made late at night after everyone had gone to bed. Some moonlight from the side helped illuminate the camper.

In the town of Lone Pine, we went to the visitor center to get a map. While talking to a ranger we learned that it was the Western Film Festival weekend. Alabama Hills is where many old time, as well as recent movies have been filmed. Yikes, there are going to be thousands of people there! She told us to keep driving up Movie road until out of the highlighted area on the map to get to solitude. Ok, we will give it a try.We did experience many people along the first part of Movie road and the many roads branching off, day trippers and camping folk. A little further on, there were fewer cars and people; it was looking like the Alabama Hills I had been imagining, the geology, the rocks, the beauty! We found a spot down a small road which had an outstanding view of the valley stretching long and wide, and Mt. Whitney, looking very large. The next morning, we woke up early, grabbed a cup of coffee, our coats and headed outside. The moon and stars were stunning! Looking over at Mt. Whitney, we could see specks of light every so often at the bottom portion of the mountain. It was hikers using flashlights, getting an early morning start on their climb to the top. What a way to start the day, glad I was where I was!
