I had been using a three step stepladder to get in and out of the camper. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

Hitch Receiver Third Step Added For Wife Boarding

For my modification, I welded up three steps that mount into the hitch receiver on a tube extension.

Hitch Receiver Boarding Step Steps Retracted For Travel

The top two steps telescope in under the tailgate for travel. The bottom step mounts on the others when stopped for boarding.

Hitch Receiver Boarding Steps Extended For Boarding

I used 20 feet of 1-inch by 1/8 angle, 10 feet of 1.5-inch square tube, and 10 feet of 1.25-inch tube. I also used a 24-inch by 48-inch 1/2-inch plywood.

It was $120 for the steel and $25 for the wood. I had to buy a 5/8-inch drill bit to drill the tubes for hitch pins. That was $65.

Hitch Receiver Boarding Step Added For Wife Boarding

It took me six hours to complete this modification and cost me $210.

The steps work great. I am very happy with it.
