I’ll admit it. It doesn’t take long for the cab of my truck to look like the aftermath of a camping gear explosion. Camp chairs, an inflatable paddleboard, fishing gear, and other odds and ends inevitably migrate around the back seat. I know where everything is, until I don’t. Sound familiar?

That’s exactly the space Goose Gear has built much of its business around. Based in Grand Junction, Colorado, Goose Gear designs and manufactures vehicle-specific storage systems. For truck camper owners, that starts with their Second Row Seat Delete Plate Systems, which replace some or all of the factory rear seating with a flat platform designed specifically for the make, model, and year of the truck.

Tell us about your professional background and how that led to founding Goose Gear.

Before Goose Gear, I worked in construction and general contracting. I later became involved in my in-laws’ family cabinet and countertop business that dated back to 1952. After my mother-in-law passed away in 2009, the business eventually closed, so we started our own cabinet and countertop manufacturing company in 2010.

Recovering from the Great Recession meant working sixty to seventy hours a week, sometimes more. At the time, my daughter, Aislinn, was six years old. Most days I was leaving before she woke up and getting home after she had gone to bed. I was burning through nearly 3,000 cell phone minutes a month just trying to keep the business running.

Then, in 2013, everything came to a head. I woke up one morning in what I’d describe as a panic. Aislinn was ten years old, and all I could think about was how I’d missed the previous four years of her life. I couldn’t keep living that way—for my family or for my own health.

I started looking for something fun Aislinn and I could do together and discovered Andrew St. Pierre White on YouTube. I showed the videos to Aislinn, and she was immediately hooked on the idea of off-roading and camping together. Soon after, I sold my work truck and bought a Toyota 4Runner.

Through those videos, I discovered SUV and truck drawer systems coming out of Australia and South Africa. Most had side-by-side drawers with a refrigerator slide on top. Aislinn suggested we head out to our cabinet shop and build one ourselves.

We already had industrial CAD software, CNC machines, and high-end equipment in our commercial cabinet shop. In a single morning, Aislinn and I designed, cut, assembled, and installed a drawer system in the 4Runner. We had no idea we were creating the first prototype of what would become Goose Gear.

Aislinn and I set a goal of camping at least thirty days that year. We ended up camping closer to forty days, and the following year we camped for about sixty days.

Aislinn is twenty-seven now and works full-time at Goose Gear. She wears a lot of hats, from product development and installations to documentation, photography, marketing, and whatever else needs to get done. She’s grown up right alongside the company.

Where did the name Goose Gear come from?

When Aislinn was just a few months old, I walked into her room after a nap and said, “Hey, Goose.” The nickname just stuck, and I’ve called her Goose ever since. That’s where Goose Gear got its name.

Where are Goose Gear products manufactured?

Everything is manufactured in Grand Junction, Colorado. We have thirteen full-time employees working out of two buildings totaling about 12,000 square feet. One building handles manufacturing, shipping, and receiving, while the second building is dedicated entirely to research and development.

Because of my background in cabinetry, we’ve invested in the same kind of high-end machinery you’d find in a premium cabinet shop. Those machines allow us to build products efficiently and accurately.

Your website says Goose Gear products are “Built to Endure.” What materials are you using to achieve that?

Our products are built from Baltic birch plywood. It’s been the industry standard for cabinet boxes for years because it’s incredibly strong and durable.

Once the CNC makes the cuts, each piece of Baltic birch is coated with an industrial-grade polyurea. It’s the same type of coating you’d find in a premium spray-in bed liner.

We’ve been building systems for X Overland for nearly ten years. Their trucks have traveled with Goose Gear for more than a million miles on five continents, and we’ve never had a failure.

From a new truck to a finished product, what does the development process look like?

If we don’t already have the design for the specific year, make, and model, it starts with getting access to the vehicle. Most of the time, it’s our customers who make that possible. They’ll buy a brand-new truck and want a Goose Gear system, so they’ll bring it to us for product development. In return, we’ll often give them a substantial discount while we use their truck to design the new system.

Once the vehicle arrives, my daughter, Aislinn, takes over. She removes the seats and interior panels while carefully documenting every step for our future installation guides. At the same time, I begin measuring the truck, creating CAD models, and building test pieces until everything fits exactly the way we want it.

After the design is finalized, Aislinn installs the first production version, photographs every step, and writes the assembly and installation instructions. Those photos become the installation guide for our dealers and customers.

Behind the scenes, we also create the CAD files, CNC programs, assembly procedures, shipping instructions, and training materials. This process allows us to deliver the same fit and quality, ensuring a positive installation experience. 

Goose Gear makes a variety of storage solutions for trucks, SUVs, and campers. Which products are most relevant for truck camper owners?

Without question, our Second Row Seat Delete Plate Systems for pickup truck cabs. We replace the truck’s rear seats with a durable, flat platform that transforms the back of the cab into secure, organized storage. If you’re traveling with a family, the rear seats obviously have a purpose. But for many truck camper owners—especially couples and solo travelers—a Second Row Seat Delete Plate System completely changes how they organize and use their truck.

How can truck camper owners customize a Second Row Seat Delete Plate System?

Goose Gear owners can add a Single Drawer Module or refrigerator slide to the Plate System. We typically see the Single Drawer Module paired with slide-in truck campers that already have a refrigerator. Refrigerator slides are more common with topper-style campers and SUVs.

Most full-size trucks have a 60/40 split rear seat, so you don’t have to remove the entire row. You can replace just one section with a storage platform while keeping one or two seats available for passengers.

The Plate System bolts directly to the truck cab and incorporates built-in anchor points for securing gear. Whether you’re carrying a refrigerator, recovery equipment, toolboxes, or other cargo, everything stays safely in place.

What are people typically storing in their Second Row Seat Delete Plate Systems?

We joke that we probably sell more Seat Delete Plate Systems to dogs than people. Many customers remove the rear seats so their pets can have a flat place for a bed or kennel.

Every owner is different, but generally speaking, tools, recovery gear, and other camping items are most commonly found in Goose Gear systems. We’ve also seen owners line the drawers with foam for photography or audio equipment.

Drawer modules can be accessed through the drawer from outside the truck or through the lid from inside the cab. This design allows owners to reach back from the front seats without having to get out of their truck.

Does the Second Row Seat Delete Plate System weigh more or less than the factory rear seats?

For most trucks, removing the factory seats and installing one of our systems reduces the rear seat weight by twenty to forty percent. If you’re removing an eighty-pound rear seat, for example, you’re typically replacing it with about fifty to sixty pounds of Goose Gear components.

Of course, you’re going to fill that storage with gear. With Goose Gear, it’s organized, secure, and positioned to improve the truck’s overall weight distribution.

How does Goose Gear handle the wiring, seat belts, and sensors left behind after the rear seats are removed?

Fortunately, on most trucks, almost all of the factory wiring is already tucked under the carpet or routed along the back wall of the cab.

The seat belts are more complicated in newer trucks because they integrate airbag systems and occupant sensors into the rear seats. Rather than removing those systems, we instruct installers to leave the seat belt receptacles connected. That keeps the factory safety systems functioning properly without triggering warning lights.

Where can truck camper owners have Goose Gear products installed?

We have more than 250 dealers across the United States and Canada that sell and install Goose Gear products. Many customers choose to work with a dealer because they’re familiar with our systems and can recommend the right setup for their truck and the way they camp.

Goose Gear also offers modular storage systems for topper and slide-in campers. How did that develop?

Dave Bennett, the owner of American Adventurist, reached out and asked if we’d build an interior for his Tacoma with a FlipPac topper. I started coming up with concepts and built him a full camper system for his truck bed.

Believe it or not, we’re still building essentially that same layout today because it just works. Our Camper Systems create places to store gear, sit down, and customize the layout of your truck bed.

The Camper Systems fit a wide variety of truck toppers. Because the system bolts to the truck rather than relying on the camper structure itself, it’s extremely versatile.

What trucks are compatible with Goose Gear products?

We support nearly every major truck platform sold in the United States and Canada dating back to about 2004, and in some cases even earlier. That includes Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, RAM, and the Jeep Gladiator. We also build products for a wide range of SUVs, including Toyota Land Cruisers dating back to the early 1980s.

What does a Goose Gear system cost? 

Our Second Row Seat Delete Plate Systems range from $1,500 to $2,500 USD, depending on the size of the system and the drawers or accessories added. Our truck bed Camper Systems range from $1,620 to $5,000, depending on the size and configuration.

Generally, a mid-size truck will be less expensive than a heavy-duty crew cab because there’s less material and fewer components involved.

What warranty does Goose Gear provide?

Our products are backed by a ten-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. We stand behind our products and are committed to providing exceptional customer support.

We had a general manager back in 2017 who came to me and said a customer had called because the handle on their refrigerator slide had broken. He wanted to know if we should charge them for a replacement. I asked him, “You’ve been here about a year, right? How many warranty claims have you handled?” He thought about it for a second and realized this was the first one. We sent the customer a new handle.

That pretty much sums up our philosophy. We don’t run into many warranty claims because we’ve always focused on building products that don’t need warranty work in the first place.

Is Goose Gear working on any new products for truck camper owners?

Absolutely. One of the projects we’re developing right now is a MOLLE panel for the rear window of the truck cab. Many truck campers can’t see out their rear window, and customers have told us they want to make better use of that space.
