For days, there we encountered nothing but beautiful birds, the world's most vicious mosquitos, and jaguars that were so well hidden that we didn't see them! The photo was taken at sunset on day two of this epic voyage through the largest wetlands on the planet. Fun fact: these pontoons are intended for cattle, not truck campers!

We drove in and got this picture along the park road. We saw moose and grizzly bears. The mountain you see over the hood of the truck is Mt. Denali, (Mt. McKinley), the tallest mountain in North America at 20,310 feet. We camped at the Riley Creek Campground that was free and first come, first serve. This was a bright sunny day and around freezing.

Fueled up in Tuktoyaktuk and hit the road about 11:45am. Northwest Territory roads are excellent compared to the Yukon. I was often able to comfortably run 55mph on the gravel and made good time. I caught both ferries easily. Fueled twice more in Inuvik and Fort McPherson. No fire or smoke on the return trip, but we could see the charred ground and clear end point of the fire that caused us delay two days before. We stopped at 8:10pm for the night alongside the road with an amazing panoramic view of the mountains above and valley below. We decided to boondock in an area that ended up with no one around that night located a few miles outside of the town of Lee Vining on jeep tracks. With a campfire going and the stars quite bright, there was a bit of green air glow in the sky making a night shot that much more special. I had no plans for photography that night, everything just came together at the right time for this night shot.

At the end of my Canada trip this year, I was in Olympic National Park heading towards Mount Rainier to hike, but both Olympic (Kalaloch campground) and Rainier were getting rained out. After 3 weeks of non stop traveling, hiking and mountain biking I needed some rest in a quiet spot for the night. I headed for Mount Saint Helens, but could not find a good place until I just decided to poke into this park and have a look. It was Seaquest State Park on the way to Mount Saint Helens. The park was barely half full, and so quiet it was like no one was there. The spot I took in the far back of the park had no one around. The surroundings were almost rainforest like; ferns, moss, and green everywhere. The light coming through the trees made everything around kind of glow. It also just happened to be 9-11-2023. Really nice park, and possibly the best spot I have had in a campground in a long time. It was a good end to my trip.

This is my favorite spot. It's not the easiest place to get to, which is a good thing. It's not the kind of place to take a tow-along rig. It's about 2.5 hours on dirt roads and logging roads from my home at Port Alice, British Columbia. It's a place where my dogs and I often find ourselves alone. I simply drove further along the forest service road until it started to get smaller and smaller, and a bit tight on the sides for the truck and camper. I crossed over an old bridge over a feeder creek for Victoria Lake. Just after the bridge, I saw a little side road turn off into the forest. It was a dead-ender, so I turned and backed in all the way to the dead end. The dogs and I cozied ourselves into the Spruce forest for a couple of quiet days of private, unplugged camping. Precious.

Somewhere along this beautiful scenic 400 mile drive we found this boondocking spot that was supposed to be in the wooded area along a reservoir, the Yesa reservoir. The water level was very low so we could drive closer to the water, standing on the sand. Not too close, having been stuck at an earlier location. We were alone, it was super quiet and the sunsets were just beautiful. The town of Escó was abandoned around 1950, all but for one person.

Although we had previously visited Glacier, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone National Parks many years ago, we were excited to now to visit the Sawtooths, Big Hole country, the Beartooth Highway, Theodore Roosevelt National Park (south and north units), the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Devils Tower National Park, and many other fascinating and beautiful locations in between. As we departed a cold and wet Jackson, Wyoming for the last few of days of travel home we were looking for a different route to get back into Idaho (had done the Teton Pass years ago) and we always try to minimize the interstate highways to the extent possible. So Highway 89 south out of Jackson seemed a good choice. Driving along the Snake River was beautiful, but Hwy 89 leaves the Snake at Alpine and heads up the Salt River Valley. Beautiful agricultural views on the valley floor and forested landscapes beyond. Further up 89, the scenery becomes full-on forest on either side and as we made a sweeping turn we were presented with this terrific Fall view in front of us. There was a small USFS campground (Allred Canyon) that we decided to pull into to check out and found ourselves in the perfect location for a memorable photo. The brilliant contrasts of the hillside foliage and the texture of the grasses and vegetation in the foreground seemed the perfect place to snap a photo of our F250 / Hallmark camper. One of our goals for this trip was to not stay in ANY campgrounds. We made our goal, with the exception of choosing to stay one night in a city park in Menlo, Iowa as the temps were in the 100's and we didn't want to run our gennie all night. Logan County State Park is very secluded nestled between corn & bean fields and hosts a seasonal stocked lake, which was dry and unrecognizable as a lake this August. It only has one or two dispersed camping spots. The county mowed the surrounding high grasses by a State Park sign and then a swatch of grass was mowed in a circle enough room for one camper. We listened to the grasshoppers, crickets, and birds the whole time we were there.

A four hour trip on the Viking Trail Highway, through rain and at times very heavy fog. Travel through the fog was slowed due to the potential of hitting a moose. The locals say that the moose outnumber humans 2 to 1. Thankfully, we only had one moose run out in front of us, without a collision. L'Anse aux Meadows, is A UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1978. The site provides evidence of human migration and is the only authenticated (Norse -Viking) settlement in North America. L'Anse aux Meadows contains the remains of a 11th century Viking basecamp and is the earliest known European presence on the American continent. Many of the buildings on site have been reconstructed based on the findings from the expedition in the 1970s. The main encampment was built out of peat cubes cut from the bog along with moss and grasses. Inside were actors representing various tradesmen (blacksmith, weaver, and others) to help one better understand what life was like when they first arrived. They even had two fires going inside to show how they could heat an entire building, approximately 30 foot x 100 foot in length. It truly was an amazing place and a awesome learning opportunity not to be missed. Newfoundland is remote, but if you go be sure to visit Gros Morne, L'Anse aux Meadows and Tera Nova. If you want to see icebergs, then you have to stop at Twillingate for a view of a lifetime.Saint Johns also has numerous lighthouses and forts as well as unique architecture. We had just arrived and were stocking up on supplies when we were alerted over the grocery store intercom advising all visitors to vacate the town by midnight. All the patrons looked around at each other quietly, and understood. Utah was closing down, another victim of Covid. We packed up camp, rushed back to the Pacific Northwest and got ready for lockdowns. Fast forward to summer 2023. We are excited that she is starting her final year of university and we are not sure who is looking forward to this adventure more, dad or daughter. Moab is the mecca of outdoor adventures, and it does not disappoint. One week is never enough here. Hiking in Arches Park, four wheeling near Gemini bridges, trail riding 7 mile and slick rock are just a few of the highlights. We were camped for a few days just west of town. And while riding we discovered this ‘all time greatest’ natural campsite. It was horseshoe shaped and gave shelter from the wind and some shade. There was a dominant eagle head rock formation that seemed to keep watch over things. A natural ledge made for a perfect bench around the fire pit. You could almost touch the stars; they seem just a little closer in the high desert. It is a bit secluded and it’s not far off the main highway. The views out over the plateau to the mountain peaks were outstanding. We set up our base camp and this was home for the remainder of our adventure.
