#015 - William HibbardQuartzsite, Arizona2018 RAM 35002022 Northern Lite 10-2EXCamera Used - Canon EOS RPActually it was taken after coming back from a very early morning hike in the hills around Quartzsite. I spend a lot of my time with the stars. I had envisioned a particular milky way photo I wanted to capture and left the campsite at 2am to capture it. I knew that the core of the milky way would pop up off the horizon around 2:30, so I had plenty of time. The idea I had was to capture an old gold mine and its remains in the foreground and the milky way soaring above. Sometimes fumbling around these hills with just a head lamp and flashlight can be difficult. So in order to get the shot I had to partially climb one hill, turnaround and got my shot. By then it was 4am and I started back to our campsite. Once I arrived, I noticed that the milky way was well above the horizon and perfectly positioned above our unit. So I set my camera and tripod down, set the ISO to 6400, W/B to Kelvin 3800, Aperture to f2.8 and took a 13 second photo of our camper using my 15-35mm wide angle lens. The skies are mostly clear here, albeit at times very dusty. This morning I was pretty lucky to have captured such a clear shot of the milky way. The yellow glow at the horizon is from Phoenix, Arizona which is about 90 miles to the east of us.

We have camped in the area before a few years ago over at Heart Lake. During the early spring time we really enjoy that part of Washington. It’s the season before the ticks and rattlesnakes really start coming out at full force. The bonus is that it is less busy that time of year as well. For that trip, we wanted to camp at a different lake and we got a spot exactly where we wanted to be. We spent a wonderful weekend camped there. We hiked around, found a few geocaches, and then simply relaxed and took in the sights.

It was moved to its current location from 8 miles away back in 2017. We stopped by because a geocache was placed on the bus to be found. We finally took time to stop there and look for it. While we knew that the bus existed, geocaching brought us back to it. The one main thing almost every geocacher will tell you as to why they love the game/hobby; it takes you places you never would have gone to or knew about. We have seen so many places, camping spots and learned about history of an area because of geocaching. We have found over 7000 geocaches so far. While that sounds like a lot, there are so many others who have found far far more. Geocaching works with what we do and traveling with a truck camper makes it easy to get to many of them. Yes, we did find the geocache on that bus. Here is a pretty good history on #thatnwbus https://lovehardtraveloften.com/united-states/thatnwbus/.

Prior to arriving, we were talking with other campers in another part of the state, and they highly recommended stopping by the Movie Museum in Lone Pine, California, before heading into Alabama Hills. What great recommendation! They made dozens of movies in this area, starting in the early 1900s, but still going on today. Knowing this really helped make this stop all the more memorable. Most of the Lone Ranger episodes were filmed here, as well as more modern movies like Tremors. We even saw a small movie company filming while we were there - something about zombies, but that's not my thing…There are several, marked boondocking campsites in the area. But, get there early or you will miss out. There are also nearby campgrounds, but not with the same views. Our camp was snuggled in between two large boulders, and had views of surrounding mountains. Mount Whitney, covered in snow, was an added bonus. The Alabama Hills area is relatively small, but very worth stopping by.

Over a span of 25 plus years, I worked in constructing projects in a number of mines in this area. I crossed the Rubies several times. On our trip to Oregon for repairs on our Host Camper at Dan Penington's shop, we decided to camp in Thomas Canyon. The National Forest campground of 40 spaces was booked. It is nearly always booked. We were lucky to get a spot and stay there one night. The following morning we had decided to take our jeep up the canyon to find a place or places to hike. We encountered the snow cut and stopped. We looked and measured the width on a few sections and moved one huge rock. Then, we made the choice of, “Yes, we can make it!” We drove back to the camper, packed up and drove up. Chris drove through first and guided our 8 foot, 6 inch camper through as narrow as a 9 foot 8 inch gap in a few spots. It took a few minutes, but no rubs! We made it! FYI, the top of the canyon is stunning. We hiked nine plus miles over two hikes and about a 5000 feet rise over both.

Nestled beneath the bridge and alongside the creek is Russian Gulch State Park’s bucolic campground; favored camp spot for day fishers, kayakers, trail hikers and also truck campers. In addition to my ancient Lance 920 I spotted one Capri Campers Retreat and at least two Four Wheel Campers pop ups.Having returned from a day trip to nearby Fort Bragg, dropping down the steep one-lane campground entry road I reckoned the time was right for a stereotypic “camper-by-bridge” shot. Submitted as more of a response to Angela’s challenge to me in recent correspondence than an example of photographic excellence. We left Southern California while under a hurricane/cyclone storm warning. We had scheduled this seven-day 1,300 mile trip previous to any forecast. However, it seems every truck camper outing we have attempted this year has been affected, if not cancelled, by floods, heat waves, winds or other atmospheric phenomena! Fortunately Northern California was in the midst of a very temperate weather spell and neither heater nor air conditioning were required.A side note; my last visit to this park was a family travel trailer trip in 1968 or so. I’d taken a photo of the bridge then too. A print of that was mounted an 8 X 10 board and coated in resin, as you did back then, and still hangs on the wall of my childhood bedroom (now my 96 year old father’s den).
