There were wide open spaces, fire rings and a pit toilet. The forest service allows you to stay for 14 days free. Our plan was to stay there for the 14 days. Little did we know that on our seventh day our world would end.The morning of our 7th day we decided to dump our tanks and get fresh water at Woodford State Park and then drive into Bennington for some provisions. Once we had our provisions we headed back to our campsite. While on RT 279 we were struck by a vehicle that crossed the center lane an hit us head on. It totaled our truck and camper and destroyed our dreams of touring the country. We were 16 months into this dream and have seen so many beautiful places. Unfortunately we did not have a plan “B”, naive to fact we may get in an accident. So for now we are thankful for having survived and taking life 1 day at a time.

It was very cold with deep snow lingering on our hiking trails at the higher elevations. Every time we drove by this lake, Mt. Shuksan was shrouded in clouds. But on the third day, a brief period of sun revealed Shuksan’s summit and the glaciers spilling down its flanks. I rushed to the opposite side of this small lake to get the shot.

We'd travelled up from Tucson, Arizona through Utah and eventually to Colorado. It was a glorious trip, filled with incredible mountain bike rides, glorious hikes and impactful memories with friends. But after a month we were exhausted. Or I should say I was exhausted. Turbo would spend all his days camping if he could. By the time we were back in southern Utah, I was ready to call it in and just get back to Tucson as quickly as we could, but I decided to include one last detour on the trip. I wanted to spend our last night on the road in a finale level campsite. So we made our way to the Valley of the Gods. And what a finale it was.Being July, it was 95 degrees when we pulled in. So Turbo and I waited in the camper with all the fans on until the relief of nightfall came. And when it did, we were greeted by a magnificent sunset in one of the most beautiful places I've ever stayed. I made sure to wake up before sunrise the next morning just to see it all over again. It just goes to show you that one last detour is always worth it.

The scenery is amazing and there are campsites right on the edge of a hill that overlook a meadow with Booger Red Hill in the background. There is a really excellent hike to the top of the hill and great views of the surrounding area.I came across this campsite while researching free campsites on the internet. I knew that it was the perfect place for my truck camper because no travel trailer or fifth wheel can access it. You definitely need four wheel drive and when it rains, the rangers will close the gate to prevent access. It gets very slippery and muddy up there so check the weather before you attempt it.

It was a nice sunny day when we arrived, but the weather started turning. We realized that a rain storm was blowing in quite quickly, and we had not secured a campsite yet for the night. While we ran for our vehicle and hurried to leave the park, the wind picked up to a pretty good intensity. Looking over the maps, we decided to check out Temple Mountain area hoping to at least get out of the wind. Upon arriving at the campground, it seemed to be a little sheltered from the bulk of the wind so we set up camp for the night. After helping a couple kids who pulled in to the side of us to start a fire, I noticed how ominous the clouds looked with a light window back over Goblin Valley Park. I think the photo shows it quite nicely. The storm passed after a bit, and we enjoyed a nice evening while planning the next days' adventure.

Post pandemic, securing a campsite was a bit of a feat, but with some perseverance after a few days we secured one for the upcoming July new moon. Born and raised in Idaho, I had somehow never been to this area. As we dropped down into the valley, we were blown away with the incredible beauty of the Sawtooth Peaks, the Salmon River, and the incredible vistas. Right before we got to the turnoff to the campground, I found this pullout and grabbed a few photos. We enjoyed a week in this beautiful area, camping in several different locations in the area.

Unfortunately, due to the incredible amount of rain and snow Utah had received, we were unable to visit several of our planned areas in north and central Utah. However, the weather was nice in the southern part of the state, and we spent about four weeks visiting several incredible areas. We feel it would take several months to see all that Southern Utah has to offer. There are so many incredible landscapes to take in!While camping around the Escalante Grand Staircase area, we decided to drive the Burr Trail from Boulder down through Long Canyon and over the Burr Trail Switchbacks. One of the highlights of the drive, Long Canyon, was incredibly beautiful, and without many other visitors as well. At the east end of Long Canyon was the Overlook, looking toward Capitol Reef. We stopped to take in the sweeping vista before us, and snapped this photo of the rocky ridgeline above the canyon entrance. The drive onward down the switchbacks and back up to Capitol Reef was very long, and rough, but well worth the day spent driving it!

After a hot and slow drive down to the Valley of the Gods turnoff because of road work, we finally were able to start looking for a campsite. We found one about 1/3 of the way through the loop about 250 yards to the west off the main road. We set up, got the Honda generator going so we could use the air conditioner in the camper, and began to settle into the evening. Overnight a forest fire had started near the only highway that leads down into the valley. It had been a bad year for fires and it definitely got us nervous. In the morning I checked the weather forecast and it was calling for winds gusting from 40-60 K's all afternoon and overnight. That was enough for us to call it quits and start packing. We rounded up supplies before we left town, not knowing whether we would get out of the valley or not, and if fires shut down the roads again it might be a while before the food trucks could get back in. It is about an hour and a half drive from Bella Coola up a rather steep, narrow (one lane in places) and twisty gravel road before you crest the Hill at Hickman Pass. We started up the hill and it seemed fine till we rounded a corner and all you could see was smoke. I had checked our local highway report and it said the road was still open, so we pushed on. I saw a vehicle coming down the hill, managed to flag him down and ask is the road was still open. He said, “Not for long. Better get a move on
