I stayed there at my friend’s ranch for a week riding horses into the Zirkel Wilderness. I couldn't resist taking a lot of photos of my new camper because of how much I liked staying in it, even though there was room in the main ranch house. My wife joined me and we continued on through Dinosaur National Monument, Flaming Gorge onto the Pacific Ocean for a slow trip down the Oregon and California coast to San Diego.

That road is now the Richardson Highway, which is paralleled by the Trans-Alaska Pipeline for much of its length. This photo was taken at a scenic pullout before Rainbow Ridge, so named for its colorful talus slopes.

For the best viewing, you need to find a dark place far away from city lights. Many aurora chasers run their cars all night to stay warm while parked out in the boonies, waiting for the northern lights to appear. It sure is nice to sit in the camper, warm and comfortable, and keep watch out the windows. I really like the sloped front window of my old Lance 1010 for that very purpose, since you can lay on the bed and still have a view of the sky to watch for the light show to begin.

During the rainy season it’s difficult to reach. As from the start, we have to follow alternative dirt roads, through laid back villages of native people, cross river beds, and through scrub. Some places are narrow and almost impassable. The first day we spent 11 hours to drive only 65 miles. We stayed overnight in the middle of nowhere, with an incredible view; 15 miles to drive to our destination. The last part of the road we have to drive through the dunes, which was not easy to pass with our 10,800 pound heavy truck camper. Native people encouraged us to continue, waiting expectant to see us get stuck, so they could push us out and get a tip. But they didn’t think about the heavy weight. And of course, we got stuck. There was nothing to do but use the sand boards.

This 65 mile long road passes through 47 tunnels and winds through this impressive canyon, which has narrow stretches of only 20 feet wide, between high cliff walls up to 13,800 feet. Some tunnels are long and winding. At their entrance, traffic signs demand to sound the horn in order to warn oncoming traffic that can not see you coming. Twice, a vehicle didn't hear us coming and we had to back up. We enjoyed this ride a lot and camped at two perfect overnight spots at the border of the wild river.

People discouraged us to drive it with our truck camper. Others said that it was fun, but you need nerves of steel. The whole time we had to be careful. Sometimes the road was barely wide enough to pass between a rock wall and a steep abyss. They don’t know guard rails here. For every oncoming vehicle, a somewhat wider place has to be found to be able to pass. Mostly one has to drive backwards for some distance. It was rainy season, so the first part of the road we drove through thick fog. We climbed to the Abra de Barro Negro or Black Mud Pass, at 11,800 feet. From that point, we descended through a cloud forest into a dry desert environment. From high above, we saw the green oasis in the canyon of the Rio Marañón. Cocoa plantations surround the village of Balsas at 2,725 feet in altitude. That’s where we stayed overnight. The next day, we climbed over a pass of 10,240 feet, after which we descended to the village of Celendin, at 8,670 feet. We bought artisan chocolate, and visited the factory. From that point the road becomes wider and easier to drive, although it was still very windy. Again we climbed. The Abra Comullca pass is 12,200 feet, the highest point along this road. The Amazon region lies behind us now. We entered an agricultural area.

I think I found it just after the last camper left. Getting there in the middle of the week probably helped too. The area is at 9,000 ft elevation with cool temperatures, which seems to bring in lots of visitors trying to escape the heat during the summer months. This campsite is located in the shore area of Big Lake in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest. I noticed the spot from a distance when I saw the rock escarpment from the road below. Then as I drove through the campground and saw the aspens beside the rocks, that settled it. The rock escarpment that provides an extra bit of privacy while the changing colors of the aspen leaves that shimmer and rustle as they drift and sail to the ground is my idea of beautiful.

You only get 1 day a month to catch the full moon low on the horizon with the sun setting for golden hour light. Then you have to be in a nice flat spot, lined up the right way, and have a wide open horizon to be able to see the moon. Somehow I managed to pull it all together for one epic shot that almost doesn't look real!

We had hopes of taking the road up Pikes Peak as well as exploring Colorado Springs a little bit. We found this incredible boondocking spot overlooking Pikes Peak in the distance. In the process of getting to this site, we caught the top of a stump on our differential and ripped it out of the ground. The incident necessitated some basic repairs with a hammer, vice grips and some zip ties. The zip ties are holding up 12k miles later! This was one of the best spots we have ever found and plan to return in the future!

This was a perfect golden hour glow and remains one of the most spectacular places we have seen at sunset. The red rock glows with the setting sun against it. Arches was a magical place which we will be visiting again!

Steep and twisty, just liked I was hoping. After we walked around Jerome for a couple of hours and enjoyed some food at the Haunted Hamburger, we ventured further up the mountains. We drove several miles up through winding dirt roads with amazing overlooks at every turn. With the sun going down, we decided to turn back since it was the opposite direction we needed to go. We took this turn around break as an opportunity to take in the incredible beauty of this region of Arizona. While we didn't camp in this spot, it was a highlight of our travels.

All of the U.S. Forests were shut, so we boondocked this location at Mono Lake for the night. While we were there, at 4am, there was a 6.5 earthquake in Tonopah, Nevada. It was really cool to experience it in the new camper. I took the photo because I liked all the rocks and they looked cool surrounding the new camper.

Wood Bottom is a BLM campsite that is comprised of a gravel lot and boat launch just upstream of Lewis & Clark's Decision Point near the confluence of the Missouri and Marias rivers. When we arrived, one camper was already beginning to set up, but a fellow emptying trash and cleaning the latrine suggested we'd find a bit more privacy farther up the road and WOW was he right! We had this boondocking site to ourselves and saw mule deer, pronghorn, waterfowl and even watched a beaver swimming back and forth. And to think that a bit over 200 years ago, the Voyage of Discovery passed within less than 100 yards of our camp! It is a special place.

We arrived at Bristol Head campground in the Rio Grande National Forest to find it closed for the season. A little farther up Forest Rd 510 were several dispersed camping sites, including this gem. At a little over 10,000 feet elevation it was our highest, and coldest camp of the trip with overnight temperatures dipping into the low 20s. Still, the solar panels collected the morning sun and the furnace took care of the rest!

We had visited this park during the summer, but had never camped there in the winter. When we arrived we were the only campers there. The lake had been drained down to its winter level and it was freezing outside, but the snow was so beautiful and it made the entire park so quiet. It was very peaceful to be there alone and to have the park all to ourselves. This photo sums up that feeling of tranquility.

We have driven by the area many times with our side by side Polaris wanting to camp, but not able to get to destination easily with our 30 foot toy hauler. We decided that this is why we bought our truck camper - to go to more remote places. We stayed about a week in the meadow watching the beautiful Aspen trees change fall colors and smell the pine trees and enjoy the deer out our back door every morning and evening. Very peaceful for the soul.

Lake Powell was one of those hidden gems we came across on our journey. We had explored Antelope Slot Canyon, stopped at Glen Canyon Dam, hiked to Horseshoe Bend along with other local attractions in Page, Arizona and Lake Powell, Utah. Getting later in the day, it was time to find a place for the night. We saw signs for Lone Rock Beach Campground and knew that was for us. Who doesn’t love the beach? We found Glen Canyon National Recreation Area where Lone Rock Beach is, paid the $14 fee, and drove down one of many roads to an area within the tall grasses and settled in for the night. The next day we walked down to the beach where there were all types of RVs, and truck campers at the water's edge. We were moving in for a few days - beachside!I was a little nervous seeing deeper sand spots on some of the roads, but my husband, Arnie, was secure and confident we would be fine, so we chose our dirt road to take and although a little bouncy along the way, WAHOO, we found our spot along the water. It was just so beautiful. We played in the water, hiked the sand dunes, and enjoyed making new friends, watched sunrises and sunsets and just took all its beauty in. One morning we got up to see the sunrise and I captured the golden light over the water and our home “truck camper”. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
