We departed Iowa and headed for the coast with little agenda. For four weeks we were trying to learn the ins and outs of RV life from park to park. Things went fantastic with a truck camper set up. It drove well, and our kids were safely in the car seats in the back seat. We had plenty of room to call it home each night. A two week trip turned into four weeks, nine states, and 5,800 miles.

The only other group there this night were five guys on there motorcycles who were tent camping for the night. We were getting ready to cook our dinner on our campfire when a storm came through. We usually come here a few days before the season opens to scout out the bird activity and try to figure out a good strategy for opening morning. Because of drought conditions and weather conditions there’s no guarantee that the place you hunted last year will be good for a hunt this year. It’s always fun and relaxing to come, scout, hunt and meet up with family and friends.

In spending more time than I should looking for deer hunting locations I ran across this spot on the the map that looked intriguing in many ways, one was that it looked like a good spot to camp. My son and I were heading home from our trip to the UP and decided to check it out. It couldn’t have turned out to be a better spot. We didn’t do any deer hunting on this trip since my son is still only eight years old, but we did get in the woods for some small game hunts, which he still prefers at this point. Finding spots on a map compared to reality doesn’t always work like that but is exciting when they do. We will definitely be back!

We made a large loop from Bondurant, Wyoming south to Ouray, Silverton, and Durango, Colorado. Then, we went west to Cortez and Mesa Verde. After that, we went north to Goblin State Park, Lake Powell, and Escalante, Utah, then crossed back into Wyoming via Highway 510 south of Evanston, Wyoming through the Wasatch Mountains. This picture was taken on the famous Million Dollar Highway (US Highway 550) that travels between Ouray, Colorado and Silverton, Colorado. Anyone who has had the pleasure of traveling this route knows the steep mountain pass, lack of shoulder, and extreme vertical drops off the edge. You earn your wings at the 12,000 plus feet of elevation you gain. But the views are spectacular in the fall as the leaves are changing colors. If you look closely in the photo, you can see a herd of elk feeding on the mountain side. This was the perfect get away for us to see some of the most spectacular country in the mountain west. I would encourage anyone to take the time to check out this part of the world in your truck camper. You can't go wrong.

We decided we had to make a trip back and explore the area more in 2020. It is part of a story of a dog and his camper and the people that operate it for him. Boeing, the rescue dog, wanted to vacation in the Canadian Rockies, but we found pet friendly hotels to be ridiculously expensive. We had the F350 for years, but one of us did not want to pull a trailer and the other was not keen on tenting. A truck camper looked like a good compromise. An internet search turned up the camper that had been equipped with a Stable Lift system. It was something we thought was so interesting and unique we just had to have it. We have been to all sorts of interesting places, but this place with mountains, water, and forest has been the best yet.

We did a road trip to Homer in mid-August at the height of fireweed season. There were fields of fireweed in full bloom along the highway and the gravel roads on top of the high bluffs to the north of Homer. This photo was taken during golden hour as the setting sun lit up the thousands of blossoms.

We explored picturesque parts of own state of Rhode Island. We would pull into scenic overlooks, walk for a while, and then have dinner in the camper. This particular day had been overcast and misty for much of the afternoon, but we decided to head to one of our favorite places, Breton Point State Park, in Newport. The ocean is magnificent in all types of weather. After driving past the mansions on Bellevue Avenue, we followed Ocean Drive to the point. With the inclement weather, there were very few visitors, so we had much of the parking area to ourselves. While we were getting the stairs set up on the camper (and carpeted ramp for our dog), we noticed that the sky was starting to clear - just in time to treat us to a gorgeous sunset while we dined. After dinner, we walked along the rocks where fisherman were taking advantage of a run of Bluefish. We then noticed the sound of intense splashing coming from a cove. As we approached, we saw the water churning with activity. The blues had driven a school of bait fish into the cove and were in the midst of a feeding frenzy. We walked well into the evening, taking in the many sights and sounds, and enjoying scent of the ocean on our mini adventure.

It was a beautiful park with walking trails and the Escanaba River flows through the property. The park is maintained by the township. We loved the city of Gwinn.

It’s the kind of day where you forget why you decided to leave everything behind and hit the road a year or so before.Out of resources, I decided to knock at a farmer’s house to ask permission to stay on his property.
