We got to White Sands early afternoon and watched the kids slide down the dunes. I got some great photographs of the truck as the clouds cleared. The contrast between the white sand and blue sky. The beautiful white sand looks like we’re parked in the snow. We rely on the Park Rangers to suggest dry camping spots and he sent us in the mountains to the Lincoln National Forest. We found the campsites closed so we pulled up to the gate of the Black Bear Group Campground and called it a day.

#101 - Tim ZehBottom of the Grand Canyon, Arizona2005 Chevrolet 35002007 Arctic Fox 1150Camera Used - Panasonic DMC FZ200You can drive a dually truck and camper down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We heard about this drive and we determined to make the trek. The gravel road is on an Indian Reservation off of Route 66 at Peach Springs, Arizona. You check in at the local motel and pay your $24.50 per person for the reservations. Make sure you get you permit as they will check. There were about ten campsites at the bottom of the canyon with nice covered tables and fire pits. We took the dually down Route 6 for 22 miles in a large dry wash that runs from the Canyon Rim down to the Colorado River. The Indians have cleared a road down the 4000 foot decent to the river. Besides the campground they also offer rafting trips down the Colorado River. The road was pretty good with some wash boarding and a couple water crossings. I had to have a picture of the truck by the river. I got some great photographs of the sunrise the next morning but the truck by the water was my favorite.I’d walked down to Phantom Ranch 42 years ago and I must say this was a lot easier. What a fantastic memory!

That night the wind picked up and blew so hard we thought the whole rig was going over the cliff, which was only 10-15 feet away. It got so bad that we moved about 12:30am looking for a sheltered spot to sit out the night. We had 160,000 miles on this rig at the time and had never been through wind like we experienced that night. Muley Point was a cool place to camp, but we'll check the weather before we go back.

Except for the twelve short days it took to drive from our home in Asheville, North Carolina to Zion National Park and back again, and going to Mesa Verde, we were in Utah. For six weeks we explored exclusively in the parts of Utah that are south of interstate 70. Because we were newbies at camping we disperse camped for only three to four nights at a time, in between spending three to eight days in National and State Parks. We had a glorious time and as far as we’re concerned. Everything went nearly perfect. This photo was taken at a spot located on BLM land we found a little north of Kodachrome Basin State Park. #140 - Rick MartinFort Stevens State Park2014 Ford F3502015 Adventurer 80RBCamera Used - iPhone 7Until 2014 we always camped with the truck and travel trailer. Then the opportunity came to have dad come with us. What do we do? A larger camper/bunk house? Nope. We tried a truck bed camper. We started with a Palomino. The set up involved raising the roof with those canvas expansion panels. That was too inconvenient, especially if the weather wasn't great. So we upgraded to the Adventurer 80RB. Along with that came a wet bath, which was a great improvement. We added a receiver off to the side so we could add receiver mounted steps while still hooked up to the travel trailer. Then we built a semi-circle deck as a better top landing step that’s covered in plastic astroturf. It has LEDs under it to light up the steps.Dad's a spry 82 and can get in/out of the truck bed camper relatively easy. It’s a great solution because he's got his own privacy. He can get up and fix breakfast when he wants. We added a second battery and solar so he's always charged. We also have the ability to connect the truck bed camper to the travel trailer so they both share each other's solar panels. We wired in an inverter to one 110V outlet, and presto, he's got Keurig coffee and toast to go with eggs and bacon. It’s a great solution! While there's nothing particularly special about this photo or the campsite, we've gone from Georgia to Tennessee to the west coast twice (2015 and 2018). Those were massive road/camping trips. In 2018 we went in to British Columbia for six weeks. We've put some miles on this setup.

Thirty Mile Point lighthouse is in the background and is located on the south shore of Lake Ontario in Niagara County, New York. It is part of Golden Hill State Park, which is a New York state park. The lighthouse gets its name because it is the point 30 miles east of the Niagara River. In spring of 2018 the flowers were not doing too much, so we altered our trip to take in parts of Nevada that we had never seen before. After a couple of nights at Valley of Fire we headed east to Gold Butte National Monument. The road south from the interstate is “paved”. In that manner it often makes pure dirt roads preferable; i.e., alignment-rattling potholes seemingly everywhere. The pavement ends at the monument boundary. I had some ideas about where to camp from Google Earth but a storm was moving in and the wind was cold and steady. We found this spot on the leeward side of some rocks and hunkered down while the rain pelted the camper and snow fell just above us in the Virgin Mountains. Early the next morning I grabbed this image of the camper and a large yucca with a background of red rock.

That morning I climbed up the canyon wall to get some cell reception for the weather forecast and took this photo.

The first night it rained nicely from 4pm to sometime in the night. I fell asleep to the nice tapping sound of the rain on the camper. The rain cooled it off nicely and reduced some of the dust from the extremely dry conditions. The next night we were sitting around the fire ring with a Coleman lantern due to the fire bans. I heard a noise in the night and looked back towards the camper. It was lit up from the LED awning lights, the moon, and the glow from one of the tents silhouetting one of the Jeeps. A nice warm feeling came over me thinking of how lucky I am to be able to share this wonderful location and view with friends. I went and got my cell phone (which had no signal in the remote location) and snapped the picture.

It was designated as a windy site, but had some trees to block it. There was still enough wind to keep the bugs away. We only stayed one night here on our Lake Superior Circle Tour, but should have stayed a couple more. The campground had great amenities with very private, wooded campsites in a beautiful forest!

The main focus of our trip was Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore and Arches National Park in Moab, Utah.At Arches National we wanted to boondock so we could be away from th bustle of a RV park and be all on our own. Our Lance and truck are perfect for this, as well as we have a lot of gear for doing so. We found a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) location just two miles from Arches National entrance. We drove two miles down a dirt road and found a mesa to climb, thanks to four wheel drive and parked on top. This gave us a great 360 degree view of the buttes, plateaus and desert scenery. The sunrise and sunsets were incredible. Stargazing at night was super since there is practically no light pollution. It was everything and more of what we dreamed of.

Badger ferry across Lake Michigan from Ludington, Michigan to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. It was such an interesting trip. The S.S. Badger is the last steam powered ship in the United States, probably the world. Yes, steam powered. The ship was originally built to carry 60 ore cars back and forth on the lake. It also server in W.W. II.I can't describe how huge this ship was. It swallowed up our rig like it was a peanut. In fact, there was a tractor trailer loaded on as well. It had a movie theater, bar and restaurant as well as two TV lounges and observation decks. A wonderful trip, definitely try it if you can.

After shipping the truck across the Darien Gap in October, we made our way through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru before entering Bolivia. Bolivia is a land of extremes: altitudes, temperatures, and road conditions all proved challenging. The Western Lagunas Route is a 450 kilometer track through the Andes Mountains in the very southwest corner of the country. While portions of it are within a national park, most of it is simply a vast, nearly uninhabited stretch of arid, high mountain desert. There are few amenities: overlanders must stock up on food, gasoline, and water in Uyuni and be prepared for self-recovery efforts. This campsite was perched beside a small salt lake inhabited by flamingos. At roughly 14,000 feet above sea level, the temperature fluctuations were brutal and the wind was fierce. It was definitely one of our more adventurous campsites in our eight months of PanAmerican travel.
