We have been full-time in our camper for two-and-a-half years and usually boondock or dry camp. It is rare that we are plugged in. We took an 11,000 mile three-month trip last summer and never plugged in.

The Microwave Breadbox

Western Oregon in the wet winter is usually the only time we occasionally plug in if our batteries need topping off. So, why are we carrying this microwave oven that is just used as a bread box? The storage space seemed more important and we could even save a few pounds.

Ditching The Microwave Wires

This was an easy modification. First, we took out the microwave. Then we screwed in a few one-inch by one-inch trim boards around the perimeter. Next, we attached some one-eighth inch thick whiteboard to hide the wires and dress up the area.

After that, it was just a matter of picking up some baskets and two small adjustable tension rods to suit our space. We use one tension rod to hold the paper towels and one to hold the baskets in place while we travel.

Ditching The Microwave Breadbox Finished

We are satisfied that we made the right decision. It can be returned to the original just as easily. If we sell the microwave, we will actually make money on this modification.

The one-inch by one-inch trim and whiteboard were purchased at the Re-Store for $5. The screws can be picked up at any hardware store for a buck or two. Baskets and tension rods were bought at a dollar store for $5.

It took about one hour to complete this modification and the total cost was $10.
