Back Up Camera On A Budget
2019 Chevrolet 3500
2014 Arctic Fox 811
I wanted a backup camera that worked with my 2019 Chevrolet 3500. Since I need to remove the tailgate to load my camper, I also have to disconnect the factory backup camera. That gave me the idea to go to my Chevrolet dealer and purchase a replacement factory back up camera.
For my modification, I extended the wiring harness on the new camera so that it would reach the back of the camper. Next, I mounted the camera on the backside of the landing gear of our Arctic Fox’s bumper. Then I plugged it into the factory harness under the bumper.
The result is phenomenal! For under $70, I have a great visual aid on the truck’s factory back up screen. I have since added a wireless back up camera with its own screen. I use both of them all the time. This is a must-do if you currently are running with any backup vision aid.
You can get a replacement tailgate camera from your dealer. I also purchased a short section of four-conductor wire, solder, and heat shrink tubing.
It took me three hours to complete this modification and cost me $70. In my opinion, the skill level of this modification is medium.
