We were returning from the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, on the Dempster Highway on September 2nd. It is a long 500 miles each way on rough dirt roads. We pulled into a gravel pit (safe places to disperse camp, lots of them!) at 65°45′55″ N 137°53′54″ W. We cooked dinner, walked the dogs, and settled in for the night. Around midnight, it was still too much light. I poured another chocolate vodka, and about 1 am I looked out and the sky was blanketed by sheets of aurora. I set up the tripod with my Apple 14 Pro and let it choose the settings. I took several shots then went to bed, and the next day I saw this on my iPad. Humbling in a way, random luck.

This was one of our camps during our three week road trip and it did not disappoint. I was a little skeptical with the terrain being semi moderate and the weight of vehicle with camper, but the spot we ended up with was worth the time. I thought evening time was beautiful with the red rocks but nothing prepared me for the morning time. This photo is what makes me want to go back again whenever we are in Utah! It really helps us connect with nature and enjoy the simple things.

We descended into the rock outcroppings in search of a campsite that would shelter us from the storm, and landed in this site around 9pm. It was a tight fit for both of the rigs, but it kept us safe for the night before we headed up to Bishop. The best part was doing a 40 point turn with the F250 the next morning to get the rig out.

Nestled 50 feet off a forest road, we discovered this dispersed spot. The stars were incredible and the sunsets were pink. I captured this moment in the evening after a day spent on the trail admiring endless views of the Stuart Mountain range. All was calm, only the birds were making noise, my husband was sipping a beer watching the sunset and our dogs were cuddling up in bed sound asleep. It was perfect.

One of the highlights of our journey was visiting the Cibola National Forest in New Mexico. Even though we spent some single-digit temperature nights near 9000 feet in Colorado at Mueller State Park, where all the roads were plowed and paved and the campground had electricity, we wanted to test our new camper in winter boondocking conditions. So, we spent some time near Taylor Peak in the Cibola National Forest. This picture was taken on our way down the unplowed, gravel forest service road. We were the only ones out there, except for one small group of hunters. The propane furnace worked perfectly, and we stayed very comfortable in our camper.

One of the highlights was stopping overnight at Trona Pinnacles to break up the drive to Death Valley. It was definitely worth it for the scenery, the geological history, and its role in several movies. This photo is from one of the better boondocking spots at the south end of the main Pinnacles area. It was taken during “blue hour,” just before the sun painted the clouds orange. Pinnacles is a short, easy drive off CA 178, with some washboards. It’s a popular spot from mid-fall through mid-spring. Since it’s well-known and close to Los Angeles, it can get pretty crowded. Be sure to only boondock at established sites, stay on the hiking trails, and leave no trace.

One of the highlights of our journey was visiting Cathedral Valley, located in the northernmost part of Capitol Reef National Park. This area is remote and difficult to access, but its beauty is stunning.In this photo, we are entering the Temple of the Sun and Moon as the nearly full moon sets and the sun begins to rise. We boondocked legally just outside the park on BLM land, as boondocking isn't allowed within the park. Most truck campers can reach the Temple of the Sun and Moon via Cathedral Road, which is part of a 58-mile loop around Cathedral Valley.To complete the loop, you need to drive the more challenging Hartnet Road. This includes a river ford and a rough, slow road that passes by Bentonite Hills and beautiful desert scenery. Talking to the park ranger before our visit, the ranger mentioned that a Sprinter Van had overturned along Hartnet Road the previous year. I wouldn’t suggest this route for hard-sided campers. We spent two days driving the loop and stopping at all the sites. The first night was spent at the free, official park campground at the top of the valley, and the second night was on BLM land near the Temple of the Sun and Moon. The route is all dirt and gravel roads that can become impassable in bad weather. Check with park rangers before heading out.

I found a trail that led to an epic campsite high above Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean. The marine layer came in along the coast making it feel like you were camping high above the clouds. Perfect weather conditions set up for an epic photo shoot all day and even during the night with a shot of the Milky Way which can be found on my instagram.

I had been watching the weather all weekend for partly cloudy conditions to shoot a mountain scene up in the higher elevations of the backcountry near Yosemite National Park. The day of shooting worked out pretty well, starting out at sunrise with a steep scree field cross country hike to the location i was after. Once done with that shot, by late afternoon stormy conditions with showers started to roll in so it was time to get off the mountain and head down to find my camping spot for the night. Once at my camping spot, the storm clouds started to break up just enough to let some good light in during sunset time, capping off an awesome sunrise to sunset day out in the mountains.

The previous day we got stuck in a blizzard driving through the mountains of Colorado, but pressed on for nearly 20 hours to make it to our campsite in Green River, Utah the following morning. We spent the day cleaning up the truck and camper, and recharging after the crazy drive the day prior. We left before dawn, and decided to stop at this turnout right as the sun was coming up in southern Utah. It was easily one of the prettiest sunrises either of us had seen, so we snapped this picture. The Northstar 850SC is easily one of the most utilitarian and practical pop-ups of all time, and I will continue to praise them forever.

Lake Ballard is an amazing, shimmering salt lake that is sprinkled with statues depicting the salt people, 51 metal statues in total sculptured by British sculptor Sir Antony Gormley, who strategically placed them across the blindingly white saltpan.

We are currently exploring Western Australia, this photo was taken at the Pinnacles WA where thousands of natural limestone spires and pillars that rise from the desert floor of Nambung National Park in Western Australia, about 200km north of Perth. These ancient formations, formed from calcarenite (limestone made of shell fragments), were created over thousands of years by processes involving the ocean, wind, and rain dissolving the limestone.

The Burin Peninsula was one, long and isolated, less visited than other areas. Frenchman's Cove Provincial Park was a perfect stop, located by a lake in beautiful deep woods carpeted with ferns and bunchberries. One morning I strolled down into the empty site next to us and was captivated by the beauty of the scene and the way our camper peeked out of the background.

On New Year’s Eve we experienced the most intense and fantastical geomagnetic storm we have ever witnessed. We found an ideal viewing spot roughly 50 miles north of Fairbanks on the Elliot Highway and we watched the space weather data as the sun set. Under clear dark skies and temperatures in the 20s, the data exploded and we experienced the northern lights all night long, from 5:30pm until the sky brightened the next day. This picture was taken at 5:30am on January 1, 2025. For space weather data geeks, it was kp7, the Bz was -22.58, and the wind speed was 502 km/second. Over the course of the night/morning we took over 500 photos and videos, but this picture captures our “home away from home” being showered by the mystical northern lights.

With temperatures hovering at 20 below Fahrenheit, we spent two days camping in our Arctic Fox 990 with our newly installed diesel heather keeping us toasty warm inside at 65 degrees, alternating between soaking in the hot springs and hiking on the trails surrounding the resort. We took this picture on December 30th in front of Chena’s Aurora Ice Museum, the world’s largest year-round ice hotel. The temperature was -23 F and the sun had just risen a half hour prior, giving the scene the beautiful blue glow of the Alaskan winter wonderland.

This photo is just a kilometer south of the Salmon Glacier Scenic Viewpoint. It is a magic spot with cold air flowing off the glacier.

A very popular event to watch, the cougar shadow is only visible for a few days at a time, only for about 15 minutes before the sun sets, and only if conditions are right (i.e. no clouds). At about 4:30pm on March 19 we parked our truck camper along the road at what we hoped was a good viewing spot and waited a couple hours for the much-anticipated shadow. It turned out much better than we had expected, as the cougar appears to be pouncing on our truck camper!
