We live four hours apart and have found this little secret spot just off the highway and behind a ridge next to a beautiful, cold, and slow moving stream. It's perfect for spontaneous get-togethers when the calendar doesn't work for longer get-togethers. We've weathered sub-zero temps on New Year's Eve as well as tumultuous summer rain storms. Just like the postman, love finds its way!

About mid-trip, after finishing the Dempster Highway and before hitting Denali N.P., we passed through Delta Junction, Alaska, and were looking for a spot for the night. We found a boondocking spot on the Tanana River, just north of town - a gravel bar that had an awesome view of the Alaska Range. Not only was there a view, but the braided river offered interesting places to walk, and the gravel itself provided countless shapes, colors and sizes of interesting rocks to marvel at. We loved the spot so much that on our way back through the area (on our way to Denali via the Denali Highway) we stopped here again and spent two additional nights! Our first night at this spot wasn't sunny or warm, but on our return, we had a picture-perfect day, and it was only a matter of finding the best angle to align the camper and the mountains.

We concluded the best place to get the full Eclipse experience was out west, not in the East in April. However, along the way, Mother Nature did not cooperate and predicted much cloud cover in Texas. We opted to make a decision two days before the event on where to go. Just south of Carbondale, Illinois, and north of Paducah, Kentucky, we settled in the Shawnee National Forest in Illinois, boondocking on a grassy mountain next to a beautiful stocked fish pond. Early on the morning of April 8, there was a thick mist on the mountain pond, but hopes of clearing out by 11am. To our delight, Mother Nature was on cue and the fog lifted to reveal a bright blue cloudless sky.Just a note, there were clear skies in Vermont for the eclipse also! Whoda thunk? I walked around the pond to see where I could take interesting pictures of the camper with the eclipse. It was a difficult task, not knowing really where the sun will be. I settled on a view lying down next to our camper looking up, catching the total eclipse and clipping our camper truck. An eerie totality of 4’07” gave us a spectacular quiet 360 view on the mountain. It was not until we looked at the photos later, that my husband said that you could see two planets in one of the photos, Jupiter and Venus. Look close and there are two tiny white spots in the photo. They are either planets or spots on my camera lens. But we are pretty sure they are celestial.

We’ve done quite a lot of New York traveling, as my husband is from upstate NY. Over the years during family visits, we’ve hit quite a lot of vacation spots including the Adirondacks. This was a beautiful camping spot with a nice opening to the lake. I liked the way the sun peered through the trees on the shore, casting just enough glow on our dark blue camper as we settled in for a quiet night, listening to the water lapping the shoreline.

#123 - Heidi BesenGlen Canyon Recreation Area, Utah2018 Ram 35002018 Hallmark NevadaCamera Used - Sony a6700My husband, Matt and I were traveling south in Utah after visiting our son in Salt Lake City. We love the red rock and canyons of southern Utah and the deserts of Arizona. We especially enjoy them in the late winter or early spring and fall. The scenery is gorgeous, crowds are virtually non-existent, and the weather is cool or just a bit warm which is perfect for hiking and exploring. We drove south from the Goblin Valley area after hiking Little Wild Horse slot canyon on Route 24 and found a mostly deserted campground (there was one other camper about 1/4 mile away from us) in the Glen Canyon National Recreation area near Hite, Utah. It was an amazing location. The canyon cliffs and buttes loomed above us and the space was wide open. The lake has receded enormously with the ongoing drought in this area, so this campground which was formerly a marina is no longer anywhere near the water - therefore, not particularly popular with boaters anymore. As we hiked around we found lots of shells from when the lake was higher. The sky was clear and the moon was full. A truly memorable stop.

A small lake nearby was home to several water birds. It was the perfect spot to rest for the night. This was near the end of a three month summer trip. We went 8624 miles, through 16 states, four provinces of Canada, five National parks and we made new friends along the way.

We had left Red Lodge, Montana with intentions to go into Yellowstone Park but it was getting into the 4pm hour. We really wanted to see the radical switchbacks on Highway 212 or as it’s known, the Beartooth Highway, in the daylight hours. We looked for the national park signs and saw Parkside Campground. We ended up right on the river and our space was $7 for the geezer discounted rate. The spaces are nice, paved, and level with no hookups, but there is community water spigots. We didn’t need any air or heat. It was the perfect temperature for the one night stay.
