If you are looking for a remote site with an interesting drive to get there, this might be the one for you. The seven mile dirt road took us 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to the site. This was the same day we did our 15.8 mile hike in the Chisos mountains. We did the south rim trail with the spur trail to summit Emory peak. I’ve heard the South rim trail is the best hike in Texas. I’d say it definitely didn’t disappoint.

I was snapping some photos of the rig and the pups to remember the few days spent out there with some friends. Mav and Rambo (the pups) happened to pose like this and I managed to capture the scene at the right time. This was the first time that I had taken this rig out to the Alvord as I had purchased the camper only two months prior. At night in this remote area, the night sky was about as vibrant as any that I have seen with the stars and the Milky Way out in full force. It helps that this area is far from any major source of light pollution (nearest town of any size is Burns, Oregon - 80 miles by air).

A lucky lottery entry at recreation.gov four months in advance secured me a permit to this scenic off-road paradise. I took this photo from a small hill near my campsite. In contrast to the usual situation, my Four Wheel Camper rig was one of the largest, best-outfitted rigs there. If I stay in a campground, I am usually surrounded by giant RVs. I spent three days there exploring up and down the coast on my paddleboard seeing more dolphins then people. This was sunrise on Sea of Cortez my last morning before moving on. I've been searching for a true four season truck camper for several years without a lot of luck. I've had a couple campers that claimed to be four season, but basing out of Colorado proved they weren't Rockies four season. In February 2023, I found a listing for some Total Composite Expedition panels. These panels are substantially thicker then the panels Andreas uses for his normal truck campers. After getting the back story on the panels (originally purchased years ago by Tiger vehicles) and verifying with Andreas, I took the plunge. I rented shop space and began gathering the necessary equipment and supplies to start assembling in November 2023. My goal was to assemble the panels and have the camper road worthy by the end of February 2024 in order to meet some friends in Baja. It was a bit of work but I was able to get the camper buttoned up, roof hatch, roof fan, lithium batteries, solar, lights, and basic electrical installed in order to get on the road. I've been wanting to get back to Baja since my last trip a couple years ago and spend time exploring the more remote areas in Baja California Sur. It took me almost 2kmi to get down to La Paz to meet some friends, but I made it and spent the next six weeks exploring dirt roads, coastline, and sections of the Baja Divide Trail. It was a great shakedown trip and just scratched the surface of Baja Sur. I plan to head back in February 2025 for round two as well as to head down to Sonora in October/November for another shakedown trip after some additional mods.

Banff was on the top of the list. In researching campgrounds, I was drawn to Tunnel Mountain Campground because of its location, scenery and close proximity to local attractions. Little did we know the beauty we would encounter all around us. We had no idea how spectacular the views from our campground would be, until friends of ours shared their experience with us. On the morning we were due to leave the campground, my wife suggested we pull the camper up in front of the mountain before we exit the campground and take a photo with the calendar contest in mind. It made for a beautiful memory of our time in Banff.

It was cold in Garland Prairie as compared to our last stop in Needles, California, but very peaceful. Sunsets are always a magical time of reflection when we are camping. Every late afternoon, after a long day of exploring, we are drawn to the sunset. We love to get out our lawn chairs with a beverage to chill out for an hour and reflect on the day as the sun disappears over the horizon. Why is every sunset so beautiful? Sometimes magical stuff happens with your camera too, and this pretty red flower joined us for this particular sunset. The picture is unaltered. I guess we just need to keep traveling in our truck camper to out-of-the-way places so we can appreciate the beauty of our natural world.

Bear Lake is unique because it is a natural crater with Idaho claiming the northern half and Utah claiming the southern half. The Mountain Fawn Campground features west-facing waterfront sites for great sunsets with the Cache Mountain range as a beautiful backdrop. Bear Lake has a circumference of roughly 50 miles (20 miles long by 8 miles wide) and is 210 feet deep. This year, the water is extremely low, which I have found throughout my trip. The water is quite clear and there is almost no one in the campground early in the season. I was tempted to go skinny dipping given the hot weather. However, my plan changed abruptly after I put my bare foot in the water. It is far too cold yet in April!

For those of you not familiar with BLM lands, they are immense tracts of land typically owned by the Federal government. Some are no more than a field or pasture, while others actually have primitive campsites. Dugway Campground north of Sinclair, Wyoming is a primitive campground with five sites, virtually no amenities, and no fee for camping. Dugway is in a natural valley with the beautiful North Platte River running through it. During the day, there were 3-4 cars of people fishing. Overnight, it was just me and one other camper. The night was extremely dark, which allowed for excellent stargazing. It was also very quiet except for the gentle sounds of the river and very happy birds in the morning. Dugway had a very clean outhouse with a bent vent stack and the most unique water pump. The water pump requires a lot of cranking and if you are lucky, you’ll get a coffee cup full of fresh water. The roads were extremely challenging and potholes required me to drive 1-2 miles per hour. Even at that speed, many things were tossed around inside the camper. Finally, you can count on having NO CELL SIGNAL. I walked around until I found a high spot with just enough cell signal to let my wife know that I made it okay!

With a planned trip across country (we’re from PA) to Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota, we decided to purchase an older truck camper to restore/rebuild. Normally we would sleep in a tent or my truck bed, but we wanted to be more comfortable considering where we’d be traveling. We purchased a 1982 Viking last fall and got to work. After discovering a significant amount of water damage, we gut the camper down to basically nothing and rebuilt it. Countless hours and care went into building the truck camper of our (practical) dreams. The inside turned out great with custom cabinets and countertops, running water, solar power, 400ah of battery, propane heat, and more all done by Liz and I. It really feels like home inside. Knowing that I wanted to propose on this trip, I really wanted to make the camper nice and make the trip special. Liz always dreamed of visiting Montana and has talked about it since we’ve been together. After just two days of our two week trip, Liz and I each harvested a turkey at the same time and I popped the question! After making our way out of the Custer National Forest, we headed to Yellowstone and spent some time there before making our way back east to the Black Hills of Wyoming and South Dakota. This picture was taken when we first got to the Black Hills. We spent days in the hills watching the sun set behind the Tower in the distance. A memory we’ll never forget. Visiting and harvesting turkeys near Devil’s Tower and Mount Rushmore, it was the trip of a lifetime. The camper worked flawlessly and exceeded our expectations. We went through rain, sleet, and snow storms without an issue, slept through 14 degree nights and 90 degree days, and everything else the west had to throw at us. We spent 16 days on the road and only paid for a spot to sleep one night. The trip was incredible and we can both agree our truck camper was our favorite part, next to getting engaged of course!

Over the years, we compiled a list of places to see and things to do, and the overlook above Salmon Glacier was added to the list many years ago. This year the trip finally happened; an epic three (plus) month trip that took us to places like Banff, Tuktoyaktuk, Denali, Skagway, and dozens of other places - including the Salmon Glacier. The road to the glacier is filled with steep grades, washboards and potholes. It's actually a road built to support mining operations which are still active today. We arrived in late August, and the fall weather was already setting in. We got to the glacier overlook and had peek-a-boo views of the glacier, but we knew that we were camped in the perfect spot that if the clouds broke, we'd have an epic shot. I got some cool photos with the clouds, but we heard that the weather was supposed to improve the next day, so we got up the next morning to see we were engulfed in a cloud and could see nothing. We waited. We waited some more. Others were at the viewpoint as well. Some, like us, spent the night, but there were many who came up that morning. They waited too. The clouds would lift a little, give us 15 seconds of view, and then blow back in. Finally, we had a solid break at about 11 AM and I got the shot I was hoping for. The slight fog that was still over the glacier just made the shot more interesting. I had to cross the street and duck behind some rocks to get our camper to look like we were the only ones there, but I liked the foreground, so that worked.
