2026 Dream Truck Survey Results

The 8th biennial Dream Truck Survey results are in and there are some critical revelations and surprises. Pay attention, truck camper industry. The most sought-after truck camping truck in North America is…

2026 Truck Camper Survey

Common sense dictates that truck camper manufacturers would be more successful building and stocking campers for the trucks that truck camper enthusiasts want. Put another way, who cares what trucks are the most popular sellers in the general marketplace if that’s not what truck camper customers want?

One could argue that this is a self-limiting statement that abandons growing the truck camper marketplace by going after the non-truck campers with pickups. This is true, but caution that focusing outside the clearly defined core truck camper market comes with increased risk—and possibly increased reward. That’s the game.

This point is at the heart of why we have conducted the Dream Truck Survey every other year since 2012. Now with eight consecutive surveys, we can confidently state what truck brands, models, powertrain types, cab types, bed lengths, bed types, transmission types, driveline type, and rear wheel configuration truck camper enthusiasts want.

No need to guess. Build and stock campers for the trucks that perform in this survey and you’ll be talking directly to the biggest and most profitable part of the truck camper marketplace. Build and stock campers for trucks outside this data and you may be rolling the dice.

Survey Updates for 2026

Although this survey has run every other year for thirteen years, we continue to update it to reflect new trucks, options, and key trends. For 2026, we split Class 4 and Class 5 trucks, added hybrid to the powertrain list, introduced a truck bed question, and refreshed the electric-truck manufacturer list. Let’s dig in.

Current Truck Results

1. CURRENT TRUCK MAKE

For the eighth straight Dream Truck Survey, Ford dominated as the truck our readers own. Only this time the percentage of Ford owners was higher than we’ve ever seen—42.08%.

This Ford win came at the cost of RAM, Chevrolet, and GMC’s numbers. Combining GM’s Chevrolet and GMC puts those brands at an even 25%, with RAM trailing at 21.39%.

Also in the winning column is Toyota putting up a significant gain, its best number for the survey at 5.69%. Everything else is either in the low single digits, or zero: Nissan 1.53%, Jeep Gladiator 0.56%, Honda (Ridgeline) 0.28%, Rivian 0%, and Tesla (Cybertruck) 0%.

2. CURRENT TRUCK MODEL

The data really moved for current truck model. Mid-Size dropped from 4.82% in 2024 to one of the lowest numbers we’ve seen at 3.76%. Half-tons put up their best number since 2012 moving from 13.9% in 2024 to 16.43% in 2026. Three-quarter ton trucks have now dropped in popularity in 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024, and now 2026. And somewhat shocking is one-ton trucks dropping for the first time to 46.94%. Which leads us to the biggest standout—Class 4 and 5 jumping from 4.63% to 7.52%.

In short, Mid-Size trucks are languishing, Half-Tons are making a comeback, Three-Quarter Tons are dropping off, One-Tons still dominate, and Class 4 and Class 5 trucks are emerging as an important growth trend in the marketplace. From eight Dream Truck Surveys, the majority of truck campers want one-ton trucks, or bigger.

3. CURRENT TRUCK POWERTRAIN / FUEL TYPE

It’s incredible how steady the data is for diesel versus gas from the 2024 to 2026 surveys. We’re talking tenths of a percent between what is essentially a 49.5 diesel / 46.5 gas split.

What about the other 4%? Less than seven-tenths of a percent were divided between electric and hybrid, and the other 3.3% don’t own a truck.

4. CURRENT CAB TYPE

We declared Crew Cabs the standard in 2024, and that’s become even more apparent in the 2026 results. Only Extended Cab/Half Doors put up a fight at a falling 19.55%. Ram Mega Cab at 1.40% and Regular Cab at 4.47% trail far behind.

5. CURRENT TRUCK BED LENGTH

The back and forth tug of war between long bed and standard short bed trucks saw long beds drop two percentage points to 46.1% and standard short beds gain two percentage points to 38.02%. If we add super short beds to the standard short bed total, the split is nearly even—long beds at 46.1% and short beds at 45.96%.

To be fair, we added ‘Longer Than 8’ to recognize the cab and chassis trucks that are getting longer beds with a 3.9% response. This data would have been in the long bed category in previous years, bringing the ratio to 50% long bed to 45.96 short bed. Long beds are still on top, but it’s getting really close.

6. CURRENT TRUCK BED TYPE

Make no mistake about it—the overwhelming majority of truck campers have factory pickup beds. That stated, there’s been considerable movement over the years towards custom storage beds and flatbeds.

The 2026 survey shows the most significant increase in both custom storage and flatbed ownership we’ve ever seen. It’s still relatively small, but it’s definitely a trend to watch.

7. CURRENT TRANSMISSION TYPE

We declared this question essentially irrelevant in 2024 as only the Toyota Tacoma and the Jeep Gladiator remain available with manual transmissions. This has proven even more true with 92.33% owning an automatic transmission for the 2026 survey.

8. CURRENT DRIVELINE TYPE

We thought four-wheel drive dominated in 2024 with 87.74% but that domination has now accelerated to 90.36%. As we have stated many times, most of us need four-wheel drive, but it’s really good to have it in those rare moments when you need it.

9. CURRENT REAR WHEEL CONFIGURATION

Like long bed versus short bed, the single rear wheel versus dually has long been a tug of war. On balance, single rear wheel will likely always win due to the fact that only two truck categories (1-Ton: F-350/3500 and F-450/F-550/4500, etc.) are available in dual rear wheel configurations. It is likely that in these one ton and bigger categories, the data would be much tighter between single and dual real wheels.

That point aside, single rear wheels gained more than a percentage point for the 2026 survey and dual rear wheels dropped more than a percentage point. Overall, the split between SRW and DRW remains roughly a 68 to 29 percent split.

2026 Dream Truck Survey Results

1. DREAM TRUCK MAKE

After dropping nearly 5% for the 2024 survey, Ford rocketed back to its highest dream truck percentage ever at 49.51%. To be clear, that’s the highest percentage ever reported for any truck brand since we started this survey.

Ford’s win came at the expense of RAM, Chevrolet, and GMC. RAM trails at 21.26% and the combined Chevrolet and GMC come in third at 21.12%. That’s a Ford knock-out.

The other standout is Toyota, nearly doubling from 3.26% in 2024 to 6.29% in 2026. The other brands—Nissan (0.56%), Jeep (0.14%), Rivian (0.14%), Tesla (0%), Honda (0%)—are struggling for relevance to the truck camper market.

2. DREAM TRUCK MODEL

This data couldn’t be more clear and important. What do the majority of current truck camper owners and enthusiasts want in their future truck? Answer: A three-quarter ton or bigger with by far the highest concentration of interest in one-ton trucks. This is no surprise as the survey results have been consistent on this point since 2021.

If we add up the interest in mini, mid-size, and half-tons, the total is 7.87%. Compare that to 92.13% that want a three-quarter ton or bigger truck and you see just how lopsided this comparison is.

The other important takeaway here is the solid growth in interest in Class 4 and Class 5 trucks. For the 2026 survey, we got the highest percentage we’ve ever seen for this category at 35.39%. Put another way, more than a third of truck campers want a Class 4 or bigger truck. That’s incredible.

3. DREAM TRUCK POWERTRAIN / FUEL TYPE

For the 2026 survey, we added hybrid as a choice for Dream Truck Powertrain and it surprised us with a 6.28% response. It also likely attracted folks who would have responded ‘gas’, cutting short the seven straight survey streak gas has gained versus diesel.

Putting gas and hybrid together would put the ratio at 51.88% diesel to 46.84% gas. Diesel still wins, but it’s come down a long way from 78.99% diesel to 21.01% gas in 2012.

Crew cab for the over the top win again. Extended half-doors are still in the game with 20.5%, but crew cab is where the marketplace is focused.

5. DREAM TRUCK BED LENGTH

Long bed trucks are still ahead in this category at 55.87% with a combination of standard short beds and super short beds coming up short at 32.82%. Long and short beds may be neck and neck with what truck campers have, but long beds are what truck campers want.

Two other details are worth noting. First super short beds only pulled 1.26% making this category something to possibly avoid. Second, we added ‘Longer than 8’ for the 2026 survey and got a whopping 11.31% response! Honestly, this knocked us off our seats. Put another way, a full 67.18% want a long bed or longer. In comparison, short beds are less than one-third of what truck campers want. Hey industry, focus on long beds more.

6. DREAM TRUCK BED TYPE

This might be the standout stunning result of this entire survey. For years, about 80% stated they wanted a factory pickup bed, with roughly 13-14% wanting a custom storage bed and 5-9% wanting a flatbed. For 2026, that changed to 57.58% want a pickup bed, 23.74% want a custom storage bed, and 18.68% want a flatbed. Holy cow. If this is a trend, it’s going to be major.

7. DREAM TRANSMISSION TYPE

Well, this is interesting. Automatic transmissions dominate, but a full 10.32% still want a manual truck. Yes, automatics have taken over, but there are still those who dream of the control and experience provided by a clutch at your left foot and stick at your right hand.

Of course, single rear wheels will almost always lead because only the heavy-duty categories (1-ton and above, such as F-350/3500 and F-450/F-550/4500) offer dual-rear-wheel configurations. Within those categories, the split between single and dual rear wheels would likely be much closer.

Electric Trucks

1. What is your current interest level in electric trucks?

There’s been very little movement in the overwhelmingly negative interest truck campers have in electric trucks. If anything, the feedback is getting more negative.

INTEREST IN ELECTRIC TRUCKS 2024 2026
Extremely Interested 4.19% 4.17%
Very Interested 6.33% 5.14%
Somewhat Interested 21.21% 18.75%
Not At All Interested 68.28% 71.94%

2. How likely will your next truck be an electric truck?

Same story here. Electric trucks have very little interest or traction in the truck camper marketplace.

LIKELIHOOD OF NEXT TRUCK BEING ELECTRIC 2024 2026
Very Likely 1.58% 1.39%
Likely 4.19% 2.23%
Unlikely 21.4% 20.78%
Very Unlikely 72.84% 75.59%

3. Do you find any of the following electric trucks interesting for a possible truck camper rig? Click all that apply.

For this survey, several electric trucks including the Bollinger B2, Canoo Electric Pickup, Hecules Alpha, Lordstown Endurance, Nissan Titan Electric, and Ram 1500 REV were eliminated due to being cancelled or having their parent companies fail. On the flip side, we added the Slate Truck and TELO MT1 as new upstarts.

In the end, it really didn’t matter. Predictably, the Ford F-150 Lightning EV had the highest percentage at 6.47%, but that was down from 17.26% in 2022. Worse, there are rumors published by major automotive media speculating that the electric Ford pickup is going to be cancelled. It’s not a good picture for electric trucks.

Mid-Size Trucks

1. What is your current interest level in Mid-Size trucks?

Remarkably, the interest in mid-size trucks has stayed steady from when we first asked this question for the 2024 Dream Truck (conducted in late 2023). The interest in mid-size trucks is there, but the broader survey data shows that interest is not a significant factor.

INTEREST IN MID-SIZE TRUCKS 2024 2026
Extremely Interested 3.54% 3.53%
Very Interested 5.97% 5.37%
Somewhat Interested 24.63% 22.88%
Not At All Interested 65.86% 68.22%

2. How likely will your next truck be a Mid-Size truck?

In this survey, 11.29% stated that a Mid-Size truck would ‘Very Likely’ or ‘Likely’ be their next truck. That leaves another 88.71% stating they were ‘Unlikely’ or ‘Very Unlikely’ to purchase a Mid-Size truck next. Based on the rest of the preferences from this survey, we suspect that some folks want a Mid-Size truck, but not necessarily for a truck camper rig.

LIKELIHOOD OF BUYING A MID-SIZE TRUCK 2024 2026
Very Likely 4.01% 3.53%
Likely 6.43% 7.76%
Unlikely 23.39% 19.61%
Very Unlikely 66.17% 69.11%

3. Which of the following Mid-Size trucks would you be interested in for a truck camper rig? Click all that apply.

The big winners here are the Toyota Tacoma (14.72%), Ford Ranger (10.68%), and the Chevy Colorado (5.77%). That lines up well with the Mid-Size truck camper market.

MID-SIZE TRUCK BRAND INTEREST 2024 2026
Honda Ridgeline 1.61% 1.44%
Chevy Colorado 7.69% 5.77%
GMC Canyon N/A 4.62%

I do not find Mid-Size pickup trucks interesting. 70.49% 72.29%

And the 2026 Dream Truck Survey Winner Is…
