Think you need slide-outs to go big? Think again! Our encounter with the X14 leaves us speechless and reconsidering our one-ton, slide-in preferences. This camper is a temptress!
The X14 will bend your mind—guaranteed. It doesn’t matter if you’re a multi-slide kinda guy or gal. It doesn’t matter if you’re used to bigger towables or motorhomes. This monster 14-foot flatbed camper, with no slide to the side, defies expectations with a ridiculous amount of interior space, storage, and amenities on tap.
To be clear, we are hard side, non-slide, slide-in camper people. We like our one-ton dually. We like our pickup bed. We would be hard pressed to invest in a Class 5 (the X-14 requires an F-550 or 5500) and a dedicated flatbed. Then we saw the X14 and thought, “Well, a Class 5 truck is about the same size as what we have now…” Funny how that happens.
The mid-ship split dry bath is all part of the show-stopping experience. On the driver’s side is a full-height shower stall. On the passenger’s side is nothing less than a residential half-bath. I mean, there are apartments in New York with smaller bathrooms than what the X-14 has. And the idea that one person could be taking a shower while the other has privacy in the half-bath? That’s some serious truck camping luxury.
The standard specs on this non-slide flatbed beast are the same as Rugged Mountain’s triple-slide Denali 3S: 80 gallons of fresh, 77 gallons of grey, 35 gallons of black, and six 200-watt solar panels (1,200 watts total). And if that’s not enough for your mobile power plant, you can upgrade to eight panels for 1,600 watts. Attention, all desert arc welders.
The battery and electrical system begins with a single 450 Ah lithium battery—upgradeable to three 450 Ah units—and a Victron 3,000-watt MultiPlus inverter, GX touch monitor, and 50 A DC‑DC charger. Air conditioning off-grid? No sweat, literally.
This was our first time experiencing the X14, and it had us talking. We absolutely love our 21 year old 11-foot hard side camper and wouldn’t trade it for the… X14? Are we tempted to upgrade to this camper? Yes, but the X14 is a bit too big for us. Then again, Rugged Mountain is working on a 12-foot version called the X12. Uh, oh.
