Sasha and Laura and their Snowriver truck camper

Laura and Sasha are selling their house to go truck camping full-time. Truck Camper Magazine will be keeping in touch them as they prepare for their adventure.

TCM: How did you get into truck camping?

Sasha: I was having a mid-life crisis living in suburbia and feeling chained to our house. We were turning into real couch potatoes. Then I found out about the Earthroamer. That was pure fantasy. Then I came across RV.net and discovered truck campers. I thought this could be 90% of the capability of an expedition vehicle at a fraction of the cost.

TCM: How did you choose your truck camper?

Sasha: I researched campers for a year. We went to shows locally but didn’t like what we saw. Then I went to Colorado and liked Snowriver. We bought a 2005 Ford F350, put Rickson wheels on it, and drove out to Colorado to pick up our camper.

TCM: What did you do with your camper in Colorado?

Sasha: We stayed in Colorado for two weeks and did a lot of hiking at Colorado National Monument. We went to the truck camper rally at Tall Pines and took weekend trips. Last year we took a six-week tour camping and riding. I ride dirt bikes and Laura rides a four wheel ATV.

TCM: You’re selling your house. What’s your vision for the future?

Laura: The vision is traveling and boondocking six-months a year and to do seasonal work for the National Park Service the rest of the time. I’m volunteering for Prince William Forest Park next to Quantico. Volunteering for them for four days gets us a spot at their visitors center camping spot from April to September. After that our plans are a little up in the air.

Sasha: I will keep my job and commute from Prince William Forest.

TCM: Selling your house to go truck camping full-time sounds radical.

Sasha: We’re independent thinkers. We read You’re Money or Your Life. It really made me think about what I do, why I work, and what’s my purpose in life. Now we’re tracking our income and realizing that we’ve accumulated a lot of junk that doesn’t do anything for us. We’re selling almost everything.

Laura: At the end of our six-week trip we didn’t want to go home. We extended it to the last possible second. That’s how we know we want to go full-time.
