Whole hillsides and the valley floor were awash with color. We found an unmarked dirt road winding up from the valley floor into the hills on the west side. The entire road and our campsite (just to the left) was surrounded by a riot of color. Spectacular!

I can only take it on certain trips because I don't want to risk damaging it on really rough trails. I also have to be very aware of heat - you can't leave a wooden instrument in a hot vehicle. This, however, was a quick one-night trip to our local mountains off a forest service road. There not anything quite like finding a beautiful place to harp in the middle of nature!

We drove deep into Anza-Borrego up oxymoronically-named Fish Creek Wash and found this beautiful, lonely spot to camp late in the afternoon. Concerned about being in a wash with the possibility of rain, we had checked the forecast at the Ranger Station. There was some light rain forecast along the San Diego coast, but it wasn't supposed to spill over the mountains.Around midnight, however, we started hearing wind and then rain on our roof. For 2-3 hours there were short bursts of medium intensity rain, enough to make us concerned. It was moonless and pitch black, so we couldn't see if there was any water flowing other than some rivulets outside our door. In the morning we could see that there had been some flow, although it was minimal - the damp outlines can be seen in the photo. While we were not in any danger, the uncertainty and realization that we really didn't know what was happening was enough to convince us that camping in a wash in the desert is not something we will repeat if there is any possibility rain. A beautiful site, but not worth the risk!

A week of warm winter weather on Colorado's south eastern plains was on the radar and I had some time off. Rather than traverse the continental divide west of Denver as I usually do, I opted to head to the south east corner of the state to hit two objectives on my local bucket list. The first was sto get to two tri-state border locations of Colorado-Oklahoma-Kansas, and Colorado-New Mexico-Oklahoma. And, the second was to explore the southeast Comanche National Grasslands area. There are a myriad of dirt roads that intertwine within the grasslands, and really cool locations and features you wouldn't expect as you drive into what looks like endless miles of flat grass grassland country. Land uses mix out in them so a land use map is a must if you plan on finding a remote boondock camp. During my exploring I happened on a trail that dove from the flat land down into an errosion canyon and discovered this arch in the camper photo. For flatlands.... it has pretty remote areas you can hide in as well as a really cool dust bowl history.

Padre Island was just part of the adventure, and it was our first time to ever beach camp. The solitude of the beach, roaring of the waves and being all by ourselves, was simply mesmerizing and beyond expectations. It was an experience that we will never forget. We were warned to park as close to the dunes as possible, due to a high tide the next morning. We live in Michigan, so we’re not familiar to high and low tides. We did park next to the dunes, but the following morning, the waves were beginning to splash against the tires. Fortunately, that was as far as they advanced, before retreating. This picture was taken when returning from a long walk along the shoreline.

We were looking for Olallie Lake and the GPS sent us one way and the signs set us another way. I voted for the signs, my husband voted for the GPS, and he was driving. We turned up this dirt road, with boulders and pot holes and off we went. I was white knuckled the entire trip up. We met a motorcyclist who called us brave, but I called us stupid. After what seemed like an eternity, we arrived at a beautiful lake. I was so glad to stop, pull out the chairs and relax. It was a gorgeous spot, that we both enjoyed, but not so much the obstacle course to get there!

Many people dismiss the 108-mile stretch between Rock Springs and Rawlins as a desolate wasteland. To be fair, it certainly seems like a wasteland from the comfort of a climate controlled passenger vehicle. For some, the only thing worth stopping for are the emerald green lawns and 50 cent ice cream cones at the Little America Travel Center. On the first leg of a solo 10-day road trip, I was attempting to drive non-stop from my house in Oklahoma City to my parents’ home in Ogden, Utah. I really had no reason to attempt such a long drive. It seems silly now. With the truck fueled and packed earlier in the week, I left OKC before 4 AM on Friday, June 30th as mid-summer thunderstorms passed overhead. I headed north on I-35 to Salina, Kansas, west on I-70 to Denver, then north on I-25 before exiting to US 287 for a scenic shortcut to Laramie, Wyoming. On schedule to arrive in Ogden at 10 PM, I had time to take a few sunset photos. As the sun approached the western horizon, I exited I-80 at Tipton North Road (exit 158), a well-maintained gravel road that appears to service oil and gas facilities in the Wamsutter Field.Traveling north past a gas processing plant, I was struck by the number of Pronghorn Antelope in the area. A little further up the road, I passed a small herd of elk. Apparently, the Red Desert is home to the largest population of desert-dwelling elk in the world. Recognizing that I didn’t have much sunlight left, I decided to follow an unmaintained dirt road to the crest of a small ridge where I thought I could find a good photo location. A faint clearing in the sparse vegetation indicated an old camp site. The ridge provided an overlook to a high-elevation desert basin; one that does not drain to any of the world’s oceans. Here, the continental divide splits and wraps around both sides of what has been named the Great Divide Basin. From my overlook, I could see north past the Oregon Buttes and Killpecker Sand Dunes. In fact, the jagged peaks of the Wind River Range, over 75 miles away, were visible just above the horizon. While taking photos, the crisp desert air, huge skies, and complete solitude created and overwhelming sense of home. I could not bring myself to leave. I let my parents know I’d be delayed and popped the top on the Northstar (and a Founder’s All Day IPA).Other than the occasional chorus of howling coyotes and curious antelope, the night was completely still. Taking photos well into the night, I woke up at sunrise and reluctantly continued my journey to Ogden, Moab, the Abajo Mountains, and Hovenweep National Monument. I’m not sure why, but the Red Desert was the highlight of my trip. It is a place that stays with me. I can’t wait to go back and really explore.

It is a washed out rutted camper truck eating monster. The picture of my truck camper shows us in the thick of the action, a scary site. Another degree or two and we'd have a different story to tell.Go Boom Ranch (named after our love of shooting on the target range) is owned by our neighbors here in central Texas. Our kids enjoy camping with neighbor’s kids who same ages. When they first purchased the ranch in 2015 we rented a 32' travel trailer for a guys weekend of shooting, fishing, and some beer drinking. Disaster happened on the drive up the access road with the travel trailer resulting in $13,000 worth of damage including the stairs, door (hole from a branch), awning, and roof. The decision was made right then that if we were going to continue camping there we needed a plan B.After much online reading and a visit to Princess Craft in Austin, we knew a truck camper was in our future. We purchase a used 2012 Wolf Creek 816 for my wife and two young kids. Since then, we have gone on about twenty camping trips (20,000 miles) including two trips through Colorado on our way to Lake Tahoe and several work trips throughout Louisiana and Texas. As you can probably tell, we are hooked. Since then we purchased a larger truck and see a larger truck camper in our future for an east coast trip next summer.

We took advantage of our only night allowed on forest roads and drove up a mountain road and camped above a lake. Upon nightfall, what started as a small smolder turned into a raging fire across the lake. We watched in shock and awe at the blaze, faintly smelling the smoke and hoping the wind's direction would stay in our favor.

It has a large private grassy area with room for several rigs, a nice sturdy wood picnic table, and a very robust rock fire pit. At 5200 feet, temperatures were comfortable in the summer, and the free stay limit was an almost unheard of at thirty days. The Monument is located near Laramie, Wyoming, at the Sherman Summit Rest Area on I-80 and Old US 30 (The Lincoln Highway) in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Lincoln_Memorial_MonumentWe had planned to sleep at a truck stop, just as we did the night before on this adventure. After a chat with my dad, a long-haul trucker, about the best rest stops in Wyoming, we followed his recommendation and dry camped in the Summit Rest Area among the working trucks. The lot was nearly empty when we arrived late in the evening, so we had our choice of parking spaces. It was a cold and windy night, the air stung my nose as I hurried from the warm cab of the truck to the camper, seeking a hot meal and a warm bed after a 700+ mile drive. Fully inflating our airbags softened the angle of our hillside parking space, but I was so tired I knew our remaining tilt wouldn’t hinder my sleep. As I crawled into bed, I wished I had put flannel sheets on the bed before we left home, brrrr! We woke up early the next morning so we could be on the road before sunrise; we had a lot of miles planned for the day. The temperature that morning was in the 30s so I grabbed my warm hat, gloves, and jacket before leaving the camper as I knew I had to visit the Lincoln Monument and snap a few pictures of the giant stone monument at this rest area! I rushed across the parking area and up the hill; wow what a sight! My lungs burned from the cold air as I hurried back to the truck so we could hit the road. The reflection of our lights on the other sleeping trucks makes the morning feel warmer than it really was.

This public land found along I-80 in the western part of Utah is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. https://www.blm.gov/visit/bonneville-salt-flats As we drove west on I-80 after our stop at the Great Salt Lake, we began to see some standing water on the salt flats. We realized that our chances of driving our 1984 Jeep CJ-7 on the salt flats were diminishing quickly. Just 2 weekends prior to our stop at the Bonneville Salt Flats, the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association held the World of Speed event here. We had read about previous years of World of Speed events were cancelled due to standing water, so we knew there was a chance the salt flats would be a salty lake when we arrived. There is a seasonal closure when the salt is moist or has standing water on it, and we were nearing that season. This area also received quite a bit of rain the week prior to our visit. From the interstate, the salt flats looked like spring break-up on an icy river; some odd shaped white polygons with patchy spots of standing water. As we got closer to Bonneville, those white polygons disappeared beneath the standing water, which made for some nice reflections of the nearby mountains.Sure enough, even before we arrived at the end of the Bonneville Speedway Road, it was clear that the CJ-7 was not going to be doing any speed tests on the salt flats. We turned around at the end of the road where several other visitors had gathered. We took quite a few pictures of the salty beach and vast lakebed before we raced the sunset in efforts to set up camp at a campground before dark.

Some of them are good, and some of them not so good. Last June, on our trip to Canada’s Maritime Provinces we stumbled upon a wonderful surprise. Newfoundland and Labrador were undergoing the coldest spring in over 40 years and as a result, we encountered an inordinate number of spectacular icebergs, and vast areas of pack ice. This photo was taken on June 19th looking out at the bay in Raleigh, a small fishing village in far northern Newfoundland.

We got in touch with a balloon pilot's crew chief and also coordinated shifts for the Navigator Hospitality directly with the Fiesta website. Between the two, we worked shifts everyday of the Fiesta. Launching and chasing our balloon was exciting! The photo is the of the opening weekend's Mass Ascension as seen from the campsite. I was rewarded on the final Friday when the pilot picked me to take my maiden flight with him and one other crew member.

It has been on my husband's Bucket List for years. He discovered that there would be race record attempts in the morning. Being an acceptable place to boondock we settled in. It was great to walk on the moon like surface of salts. We even drove a portion of the tracks. After waiting over six hours, a Triumph motorcycle racing team attempted to break the 400 mph speed barrier. Disappointingly it broke down after a mile and a half only reaching 211 mph. At that time it was time for us to move on.

We enjoy hiking and seeing all that Nature has to offer. But I had never before seen so many shades of green in one place before. Our National Park System helps preserve these special places for all to enjoy. Truck camping allows me to visit as many parks and off the beaten path special places as I can.

We camped nearby in the Ochoco National Forest over the Memorial Day weekend while scouting locations for the Solar Eclipse. This spot was a winner and we returned in August for the eclipse; it was fantastic! There are many terrific sites here and an abundance of dispersed and campground options throughout the Ochoco National Forest.
