This one was along a gravel road on the Chattooga River (Deliverance River) at Long Bottom Ford Campground. There were about ten free campsites that are first come, first serve with a fire ring and a lantern post. I had a great time.

We have been through this trail in the Jeep, and found bountiful vistas and a number of places to dry camp. We wanted to return when we could spend the night in the Grandby. Since this area is still in the desert, camping would have to wait until the cooler months. The weather cooperated in February. We loaded up the truck, made our way down the rocky trail and found this great out-cropping of red rocks. It had a natural fire alcove, so we settled in for the weekend. We were hoping for clear starry filled skies but the clouds rolled in. It was still a great time. It was less than two hours from Vegas, but it seemed like a whole new world. You gotta love truck camping!

It is a large campground with a mix of tent and RV camping with 20A power in the RV area. However, it has become louder and louder over time. Our last visit there over Memorial Day was too much. From dawn to the start of quiet hours at 10pm it was obnoxious. So, we decided to look for alternate campgrounds. We opted for Clarksburg, Massachusetts at the opposite end of the state. This small campground without power is wonderful. The campground was full, but mostly with families in tents who were friendly, quiet, and respectful. We had a wonderful, restful five day weekend there even with heavy rain the first two days. We were dry and safe in our camper, and even ventured out to tour the area including going to the opening day of a wonderful Grandma Moses painting exposition in Bennington, Vermont.

We hit the road in our truck camper four days later to explore Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Our entire trip was 2½ months long and was our first, but definitely not our last, extended road trip in our camper. While on the road we learned of the Havasu Balloon Festival and Fair in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. We made a reservation to dry camp at the festival site so that we could take in all the festivities. Our site was at an unused golf course that they had opened up to RV parking for the festival. When we arrived, the area’s host was thrilled because she saw our truck camper. She had a premier site for us since our rig was so small. Much to our surprise and delight she directed us up to an old putting green up a small hill, where we had a commanding view of both the lake and the festival venue. As we were setting up our camp site, one of the neighboring Class A motorhome owners who had arrived before us came up and mentioned the host said they couldn't park on the green, and they were curious why we were able to. Well, let’s just put it this way, the host said no large RVs on the green, just small rigs like ours. Needless to say, we were especially thrilled to have a truck camper that weekend. The winds were rather unpredictable during the festival. As hot air balloons floated overhead all around us we began running across the field toward our camper to watch the balloons dip and run on the lake. What a surprise it was to get such a perfect cell phone photo while running across the field.

It was the first major trip. It really made us feel like we finally made it and we were using the camper the way we intended it. The state park is outside of Eagle, Colorado. You have to take a dirt road out of town to get to it. It’s not a rough road, but it’s still off pavement. As a truck camper owner, at some point or another, we all get that same feeling of getting away from the rat race of life.

We toured just about every national park along the way. Now we are two weeks back from our trip and are moving to northern Idaho.

It took us a good hour of searching since the campsites were full. We finally located this site as the sun was setting and the clouds were glowing. I climbed on rocks across the road to take a picture of our camper during its maiden voyage.

Usually we just drive into the National Forest at night to find a spot to camp. We headed up earlier than normal, so we decided to drive further than we usually do to try and find a good spot. We kept taking turns at forks in the road and ended up by ourselves in this beautiful secluded rock quarry. It's too bad we didn't have our fishing poles. Our dog enjoyed fishing in the water in our place.

This year we decided to start early by camping at one of our favorite nearby campgrounds on New Year's Eve. The caretaker had to plow the road to get us in. We were the only two people in the park. This may become an annual tradition!
